Anyway, Death Note was one of my main motivations for getting back into playing chess more often. Light may be an evil bastard, but he's a smart one, which earns my respect.

That's your motivation to play chess? That's rather lame. =\

Bah, Light isn't smart, the author only makes you think he's smart. Wait until you meet his evil twin brother separated at birth, Dark!

... er.. wut :?:

if Light isn't evil.....I'd hate to see Dark!!!!

..."Light" is fun to say, but I almost would prefer naming him (or keeping his name) "Hikari"
whats kainda funny is that Ed's 5'6", and he's taller than me. ............and he's called short..............*sigh*

"Raito" is how they say it, "Light" is how the author wanted the translation to be made.

So what does "Hikari" mean? I think I'm missing a reference.

But Light's kanji for his name is Tsuki, which means "Moon".

*smacks self for stupidity*

I think Hikari is Japanese for Light........and that maybe the for moon was just a weird way of spelling it....... :?

I'm almost positive that (the kanji for "moon" can also be pronounced as "Light") is completely made up by the author.

Yeah, "hikari" does mean light in japanese. But Light's name should really be Yagami Tsuki in written form.

The first time Misa sees him, she even makes that comment. "Yagami Tsuki... what an unusual name..."

Yes, Hikari means "Light" in Japanese and "Tsuki" cannot be read like that. The author made it up.

 ......

on the topic of kanji....Im friends with the japanese foreign exchange student at my school, and I got her to show me my name in kanji, and when I looked it up on some kanji website, each symbol had a word (or words) that it stood for, as well as a letter or two......

so would "tsuki" just be PART of light's name?

Ep 25 (SPOILERS. All of it!)

ZOMG!

I loved this episode! :D
I have read the manga so I haven't bothered to watch much of the episodes but had to watch this one because, well, L dies.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well executed it was. I loved the rain scene, where L pretended he didn't hear Light, forcing him to go into the rain as well. Also all dialouge between Light and L was deeply intruiging.

I think it was all done very beautifully, and I like the fact that they strayed from the manga (neither the rain scene nor the foot scene was in it originally from what I remember... and I think I'd remember such a thing :P)

It gave a strong impression and many things about L were subtle in its revealing which I found appealing.

Too bad L's inner monoluge at his death wasn't there... But oh well
There's only one kanji for his name, no hiragana (or katakana) before or after it. So "tsuki" is his entire first name, so it really can't be read any other way. But the word "Light" aka "Raito" SHOULD be written in katakana though, since it's based on phonetics, and not a true Japanese word.

In reality, you're right, the author should've used the kanji for "hikari" for Light's name, then she probably could've gotten away with it. But I don't know what she was smoking that day, so now the kanji for "moon" means "light" thanks to her.
