Let's see what we have here. In the beginning, Studio BONES has mostly created anime series that have good action with high substance like the Cowboy Bebop movie and Wolf's Rain. Then they tackled a cerebral mecha genre called RahXephon in which comparisons to Evangelion are never-ending. Then there's other fan favorites like Fullmetal Alchemist, Angelic Layer, Scrapped Princess, and so on. But basically they're mostly somewhat shounen affair.

Now BONES have tackled something that pretty much a first in their history.....a shoujo comedy called Ouran High School Host Club directed by the man who brought you the Ojamajo Doremi series. You can read up the synopsis here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6122

I'll be brief. It involves a cute yet poor girl name Haruhi (surpisingly voiced by the infamous Maaya Sakamoto) who's in a rich school due to her scholership. And she's basically surrounded by a bunch of bishounen rich guys. Of course the twist is that the guys thought she was a guy due to her tomboyish appearence. Let the yaoi and possible yuri jokes commence!

But seriously, I found the first episode to be rather amusing, and it really shows that BONES has a knack in comedy (especially with the abundance of visual cues that were in place like the light bulbs). They do toy around with the shounen-ai themes, but I find the aspect of Haruhi trying to fit in to be quite something. And have to say, Haruhi is by far the most level-headed and rational I've ever seen in a shoujo series. She doesn't overreact over anything (well, not too much); she just goes with the flow even when things gets tough. That aspect I bet is what the guys admire about her especially that potential love interest Tamaki! :o

I picked up the first manga volume recently, and I loved it. I didn't know there was going to be a series of this, so naturally as soon as I heard about it I had to check it out. The animation reminds me of Fruits Basket for some reason.

Chances are that Host Club is going to become a new obsession for me :P

And Tamaki amuses me to no extent...

I knew that Maaya Sakamoto does the voice for Haruhi, but after watching the first episode, I had to double check.

Haruhi is like the best friend character in many other shoujo anime/manga series - smart, level-headed, relatively calm (even when Tamaki walked in on her changing), very down-to-earth, and fairly perceptive. Except that she is the main character and like many main characters, is a little bit unrefined.

The animation is very nice and the character designs are appealing. The opening theme is very catchy, and the BGM is very fitting. And the guys in the Host club have great lines.

Surprisingly, my favorite character is Tamaki, followed closely by Renge.

Interestingly, this is the second new anime with a main character named Haruhi, the first one being The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. And like Kyon in TMoHS, Ouran's Haruhi is the straight man in the comedy. Also, they both get hijacked into their respective clubs.

Must be Suzumiya's will

I didn't really want to follow this show in the start... For one thing, I didn't think it was my taste and I was already following a few too many series... however, after some nagging from my sister and a few episodes later, I've come to really enjoy this show... weird...

Is the film crew supposed to be a parody of somebody in ep 4?

Excellent show, I'd prefer the melodrama to be a little less focused on soft yaoi, but its all in good fun.

From the looks of it, the crew is an amalgam of Hollywood movie crews. Since the manga came out in 2003, and the characters mention a vampire movie from the year before, I assume the director is Guillermo Del Toro.

With episode 7 out, it seems a little late to develop a more focused plot, is the show just going to be intermittent views into their lives?

O_O Yay! A Ouran Host Club thread!

With the way the manga is going, there hasn't been much plot development either and there's 8 volumes currently out in Japan. It looks like the anime is gonna follow the manga up until the last few episodes and then try to conclude it, I already see the anime having a biased towards a development of a relationship between Haruhi and Tamaki (in the manga, no relationships have formed... just possibilities).

I do not have any qualms with the series, as it does FAITHFULLY follow the manga... and for studio bones, that's a big step.

Oh! Rahxephon referrence in episode 7 for the win!
