The Place Promised in our Early Days

Postby Swordfish23 » Tue Aug 16, 2005 3:48 am

Anyone seen it? I just watched it after buying it from Advfilms.com and damn..that was really great. Id recommend it to anyone who likes movies even if they dont have action and are just all about the characters basically. Great music in it, dubbing is really good too, stories pretty good too. Id give it like a 4.7/5. Anyways if anyones seen it get back to me, would love to discuss it.

I think that a lot of people here know this movie by the title <i>Beyond the Clouds</i>...

Not exactly. The Japanese release had the main title Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho, with the subtitle The Place Promised in Our Early Days. Kumo no Muko... literally translates to Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place, but for the English release, ADV dropped the Japanese main title and used only the subtitle on their release.

As for the film itself, I enjoyed it. I liked Shinkai's previous work (Hoshi no Koe), and was looking forward to seeing this one. Like HnK, he has issues with his pacing, but KnM's pacing is much better than HnK's. I think on his next trip out, he might have pacing completely worked out.

All of the characters were interesting, some more than others, though I wish I knew more about the world they were in. Maybe reading the prequel manga Tou no Muko (Beyond the Tower) would have helped.

The animation, especially the computer-generated parts, is gorgeous, which is welcome, given how weak the cel-based parts were in HnK.

I agree, the music is quite good as well. Hopefully, we'll be getting this soundtrack in the US soon.

Shinkai definitely has my attention on whatever his next project will be.

About the world they were in it seemed almost entirely normal until it started talking about everything having to do with the tower. Besides that everything seemed pretty normal and realistic. Like the hole north and south division and all that.

I have this on Netflix, I've been waiting since the day it came out for it to come. It's still on the long wait list. T_T

I didn't quite like it. Too much trams, railroads, electric poles. But not much of the story. 2/5.

Lol that sounds like a bad reason for not liking it, not enough action for you?

I guess so. I fell asleep while watching it.
But I liked the CG at least it's a good source for AMV footage. :D

I finally saw it today. It was a good movie, even though there was really no action in it (unless you call the main character getting punched or that one plane being blown up action). I enjoyed the music to it, but I think they played the same song too many times over.

I bought the DVD just to hear the English dub. And I have to say, the dub is excellent; the VAs of the main characters did a very nice job on bringing them to life. It seemed that I understood the movie a lot better than when I first saw it on fansubs. 8-)

Now the one thing that surprised the hell out of me is that the ADR director of this movie is Steven Foster. If you guys don't know him, he tends to put really good dubs into anime series by "bastarizing" the original script (see Voices of the Distant Star for example). The dub script for Beyond the Clouds is actually very tight to the original; he didn't make any major alterations at all which is definetely a first.
