It's a virtual reality game, and Tsukasa fell into coma while playing it. When that happened, Tsukasa's mind was trapped there.

I belive the evil entity that didn't want the girl to wake pulled Tsukasa's mind into 'The World' and changed it to make her think she was a he and to prevent her from waking the girl. The entity was trying to make a copy of Tsukasa, but when it couldn't make a complete copy it drag her mind into 'The World' which caused the coma
Can't the end of the road be also thought as the beginning for the journey back.

Yes, it's confusing, since the story is split into all those other anime and games. As if I'm actually going to track down all these components of the story. .hack//SIGN (the only section I watched, and didn't they not show the last episodes on CN?) is too incomplete.

(On a side note, Otherland did the whole 'trapped in virtual reality' thing better, with the victims experiencing extreme pain when someone unplugged them from the VR until they were plugged back in. The other two books are another story, though, but I digress. )

There was actually an episode where Tsukasa's father pulled the plug from the life support system and she started feeling pain in the game until it was plugged back in.

Yeah. It was all very wierd.

And if Cartoon Network really did leave out the last episode, I have yet another reason to storm their headquarters. (It's a very long list.)

What made Tsukasa so strange compared to the other player characters was that she could feel pain in the game. That's what got some people very interested right off the bat.

I still don't get what the old man in the special area was talking about, or what happened to the player killer at the end.

I have all six SIGN DVDs, all four of the game chapters (with all four LIMINALITY DVDs), and all three of the Legend of the Twilight DVD and two of the three Legend of the Twilight mangas.

Out of all of that, the important one that everyone needs to get to learn everything there is to know is the fourth LIMINALITY DVD, Trismegistus (which comes with the fourth game, .hack//QUARANTINE). There is a special Easter Egg cheat on there that leads to the Ultimate Guide to everything .hack up to the end of the games.

(Following are some answers to the questions posted in this thread. Some are spoiler-tagged so anyone browsing doesn't necessarily have to see the answer and spoil the fun of watching it. Just highlight the text in the SPOILER quotes to view what's there. :) )

They did air the last episode on CN. I've seen it aired there many times.

SPOILER:
There are instances where other characters begin to experience the same things. Mimiru, for example, notes that Bear's hand feels sweaty as he pulls her up when they explore the Upside-Down world. The storyline of the Video Games have characters that fell into comas still playing the game in the system (Kite sees Sieg around, even though his player is in a comatose state in LIMINALITY).

The reasons behind the comatose states aren't revealed until Legend of the Twilight.

Brigid wrote:I still don't get what the old man in the special area was talking about, or what happened to the player killer at the end.

SPOILER:
The "old man" (aka Harald Howerick, the creator of the game) was trying to tell the truth behind Aura and Morganna Mode Gone, but the data it used was very fragmented and could only be understood by those who had seen Aura (like Tsukasa).

Sora's fate is even more dire. In the last episode, he fails to escape Morganna Mode Gone and his character data is used to create Skeith, while his player (a 10-year old kid) goes into a coma. Skeith returns in .hack//INFECTION as the first boss you fight against. Once defeated, Sora is freed from him and, in .hack//OUTBREAK, you will receive Sora's Blades as a reward (the best blades, IMHO - they can cause Instant Death).

Think of this event as an analogue to The Matrix. Tsukasa's mind is stuck in the virtual world apart from it's body (much like when Neo was stuck in the Trainman's station in Matrix Revolutions), and if something happens to one, then the other suffers also.

ZealDarklord wrote:I belive the evil entity that didn't want the girl to wake pulled Tsukasa's mind into 'The World' and changed it to make her think she was a he and to prevent her from waking the girl.

Tsukasa is a girl playing a boy -- that's not unusual in RPGs, though, since many players usually play opposite sexes. Her mind is then trapped within the game, and her own memories suppressed, mostly because she is no longer connected to her body. The only memory she has at that point is what the game has copied from her already.

(What follows is from .hack//LIMINALITY - Part 4: Trismegistus)

SPOILER:
The most interesting part of The World game is that it copies the personality data of everybody. This is because Harald Howerick wanted to give Aura a broad range of human experiences. However, that data gave awarness to Aura's "nanny", Morganna (aka The World's Operating System), who rebelled against Hoerwick's programming and kept all of Aura's power for herself. Therefore, the "memories" that Tsukasa has are just "personality data" collected by the system and under the manipulation of Morganna Mode Gone.

Ohhhhhhh.

I'm still confused, but it makes a little more sense now. (Must get PS2. Must get games.)

Oh! Me too, except I only have 1 of the Twilight mangas because it didn't interest me too much, and didn't have Tsukasa.

The show may seem very confusing at first, but just watch the episodes 4 to 5 times and most of the questions should go away.

.hack//sign is one of my favorite animes. It looked boring from far away when I saw an episode for the first time, but pulled me in after a couple more. All they really do is talk and barely anything else and it's not even a love story, but it's just so damn amazing! This show should get the "most talking without being boring" award if there was one. Liminality and Legend of the Twilight weren't as interesting to me, but still good.

Thanks GloryQuester I've been wondering about a few things from this series and that clears up a few things. Although I would like to know a bit more about the Morganna Gone Mode and if she's still around.. Haven't played the games but I have seen Luminality and I hear she isn't much mentioned in them.

Semi-spoiler reply wrote:I thought that while the core cause was the same (as in an evil semi-omnipresent being in the World), the reason for doing so was different between Legend of the Twilight and SIGN (I haven't played the games) In LotT, it is so said being can bring True death to the world and discover it's secrets, but it's different in SIGN.

(I just have the SIGN and Legend of the Twilight animes along with all three Legend of the Twilight manga)
