No clue, but I own a PS1 anyway. I didn't think there were any .hack games for that system.

As far as I know, INFECTION was the first game out, and that was for PS2...

The reasons behind it are the same, though: some entity hypnotizes people into thinking they are dead, and the body follows suit. As to the "mind still in the game despite people being on hospital beds" thing, that part hasn't been quite explained.

There was actually an episode where Tsukasa's father pulled the plug from the life support system and she started feeling pain in the game until it was plugged back in.
