OK, I've seen the "it's only an amv" card played before and it doesn't make much sense and I'll explain why.

AMVs may not cahnge the world, they may not mean much to anyone else and they dont have the same protection as truly unique creations that we can copyright and patent and call our own. They are just trivial things made out of fandom for fun.

However, despite this, there are people who work very very very hard in making them. Because of this, there should be a certain amount of respect for the hard work put into such amvs and projects. This is also my argument against using other people's footage. When we make amvs they are mainly in homage of the anime - when someone makes an amv using someone elses footage that is not in homage.

With the DDR project, it has started quite small really and has overcome many hurdles. Everything is in place for allowing vast numbers of new creators in the future projects and the project has gained a notoriety to the extent where it is very desirable to be an editor of a ddr video as part of the project.

Now of course there are no laws to say that someone can't come along and want to do the next one first before the (for lack of a better word) 'official' one is done it is in a way disrespectful to the hard work put into the project.

In the real world, if I was to make a movie called Star Wars: Episode 3 and finish Lucas' story before he could I wouldnt be allowed because of copyright. It's his original work and I'd be busted for copyrigth infringement. However, even without the legal problems it would be rude and slightly disrespectful.

Now, to bring it all back to the problem at hand we have TommyRude who really wants to do a project of his own. Good luck and godspeed to him. However, it is undeniable that doing this particular project will undermine the hard work of the original ddr project organisers. It's not about heirarchy or anything like that - it's just a case that it's going to be a big let down for people working on the ddr project.

Nobody really wants a situation where we have two different versions of the 5th mix, one organised by Tommy and one by Brad, Quu and Hsien. For starters there's soooooo many tracks. I honestly dont think there are enough creators to spread around :) Also, I can't really see the ddr project editors wanting to make their 5th mix tracks when there's already one out there.

The DDR project was a grand scheme that has been developing year by year. Within this grand scheme there is the idea of adding more and more creators and finally having a whole range of mixes done to anime music videos. It's a great idea and one that really works well as a project that grows and develops year by year. But that all gets fucked up. When TommyRude makes the 5th mix project, that grand scheme which wasn't his idea gets trashed. - it undermines the whole thing. It's not only the hard work done by Brad, Quu and Hsien but the work of all of the creators on those projects.

Again, I'll reiterate that there is nothing stopping TommyRude or anyone from doing this but it still doesn't make it a good thing. I honestly think that this undermines all the hard work done in making the ddr project the success it is. It might not look much from the outside - 'a bunch of videos, how hard is that?' - but the reality is that it's been a LOT of work for all involved.

I don't expect everyone to see it like this but that's how I see it. If it was a different project I'd be behind it all the way but to use the popularity of the ddr project and to then go and undermine all the hard work that has been put into making the project a success... well, I just don't think that's right.

I know "it's only amvs" but work and effort are the same however you look at it. I wouldnt like to build a house only to have someone else want to come and sleep in it just because they think it's fair game. :/

And in the end... It doesn't really matter... :)

I remember when I was in Middle School, and all the girls (and very few guys) were listening to a band called, New Kids on the Block... Everybody loved New Kids on the Block, they were the best thing since The Beatles... No... Sliced Bread...

Well, New Kids came and went... and some came back... JUMP AROUND! Baby, you know I will do it to you...

Then came another boy band, called The Backstreet(door?) Boys... Wow, the record companies said, this isn't going to last like New Kids on the block, we should remedy this, and clone them... N'Sync was born, with other generic boy bands, and the little girls ran rampid, and didn't know who to choose... But the record companies laughed it all the way to the bank...

What is the moral of this story?

Where fame, fortune, and a little notariaty exist... Many will follow...

It's life people, so is the American dream. :) God bless us all :)

Can't wait to see everyone at AWA!

 Wow, this has garnered a lot of...publicity. And up until I saw the responses to Tommy's idea I was under the impression that this was a pretty good idea. I still do think it's a good idea, but here's a suggestion: Why not use an earlier mix of DDR, rather than 5th? At least that way there won't be any toes getting stepped on. But of course there's the possibility someone'll get pissed that you're doing a mix that's already been done by the other DDR Project.

Oy, I wish I knew a laundry list of other OSTs right now...
Everyone is not the same as you.

I was under the impression as well, until he opened his mouth.

Naa, don't feel like it. And the reason I posted that was to what Tommy said in the post above it. I doubt he's going to reply but I'm betting heavy that he is still monitoring this thread, and considering we know how heavily Tommy will carry his feelings I doubt anything we say is going to change his opinion so we might as well say what we please.

Final thoughts

Jason, man...are you still pissed at having to replace all your NKotB posters with BSB? And then later with N'Sync posters? Gotta let it go man, gotta let it go.

Here are a few of my further thoughts before I let sleeping dawgs lie:

TommyRude wrote:Why am I bein' stubborn? Few reasons.
1) I've already promised tracks to a dozen or so people
2) It DOES bother me that people are laying down these unspoken 'copyright' laws on the mixes.
3) And yes, pride comes into play. Y'all said I can't, so therefore I will.

Why is TomRude being a hypocrite? It looks like it's okay if HE lays down some unspoken "rights" to videos by his promises but that other's can't? (see reasons #1 and #2) Whateva'!!!

Reason #3...well you can't argue against pride.

TommyRude wrote:If you don' understand what I mean about the ruling class, you're blind.

Now y'wanna talk about respect, all respect I had for brad went out the window when he stole $4 from me at AX. All respect I had for Hsien (which was a lot since he's one of the early influences I had in AMVs) went out the window when this little fiasco got started. You hit the nail on the head, old buddy. "You don't give any, you don't get any." That works both ways.

Hakura: Well I only pray that we can get along wit'out the artistic mastermind that brought us such LEGENDARY videos as Trigun: Beer.

And we should all be so glad that there is FINALLY a person who isn't an elitist prig like those damn AMV ruling classes.

TommyRude wrote:Actually, Quu's cool wit the idea. He jus' didn't like the possibility of me keepin people from the AWA one. Cept now, Hsien is. Hmmm......wonder what he's gonna think of THAT.

You don't know the half of it.

TommyRude wrote:Okay, thass it. I'm done defending my position. Say whateva' the hell you wan't. No one's gonna stop me, so if you feel the need to act like an ass an' vent your spleen about what a vile criminal I am, HAVE A HAPPY, cuz I ain't gonna respond to it.

By defending, he must've meant (and I am speaking in the past tense because he's not gonna respond any more to our ass-like spleen venting) by viciously insulting people, contradicting himself, and putting words in people's mouths. I don't think anyone said he's a criminal and it'd be kind of silly to say so, but like I said earlier, respect is a two-way street if you catch my drift (he missed it last time).

And I heard that ole TRudeBoy asked that some certain people not DO a 5th mix because he had like laid claim to it and all. What's up with that? Why you gotta go into someone's house and shit on their floor because the bathroom ain't finished? Whaddamattayouididyourmomlastnightshewasgoodlololololololol?

One last thing...I'M KING OF THE WOOOOORLD!

Wan'it.

Nobody has rights to AMVs...

I joined for competition, but this thing seems like something for fun...

^_^

If that's true, then this to me will be the "fun" competition...

I'm not as 1337 as some of you "others" but hey, I'm not doing this cause I can, I'm doing this for THE FANS!

I'm sorry, but everyone who creates art, automatically has rights to it. You may not have rights to the anime or the song, but you've created something with them, thus giving you the rights to your AMV. Agree with it or not, it's objectively true.
