Scrapped Princess AMV

Post by AlyxVA » Wed Feb 25, 2004 5:22 pm

Well... this is my second music video done (the first I might post, but its only been shown to friends really... and possibly shown at ACEN last year, but I don't know if it got in on the showing or not).

Its all footage from Scrapped Princess and the song is Faint by Linkin' Park (I just really like the song, even though even I think it might be getting a bit old).

Be gentle if you give comments... I'd like to know how I can improve though. It took me forever to do this... ~_~

Hello,

I watched your video and I have a few comments, please
take them kindly :)

I thought the video started out quite well, I liked
the quick transitions between the various characters'
faces. You have some quick blackouts which I
thought were rather distracting and didn't serve
much of a purpose. Nonetheless the intro is well
done, I liked the scenes you chose for the first
few stanzas, they match pretty well e.g. the scenes
that go with "a little bit of loneliness, a little bit
of disregard" are nicely chosen because they are
literal but they also convey the feeling of being
left isolated and being ignored. At this point I think
the video becomes a bit more uneven because
although you do find a lot of scenes which match
well in tone and visuals there are many in which
you stick to the literal wording of the song, and this
to me seems a mistake (although a very common one :)
So, for example, you have scenes in which the
characters do what the song says (say, turn around
dramatically), but although the lyrics are full of angst
the character's expression is a smile from ear to ear,
and that doesn't quite click...

My belief is that, when faced between choosing a literal
match and another scene which may not have any
visual relation but which expresses a similar feeling
(or idea) you should go for the latter. Unfortunately,
this isn't easy to do, and many of us fall into the
"slideshow" trap of showing things rather than creating
an atmosphere.

The lip-synching is not very good, and I don't really think
you need it (personally I dislike l-s in general, only on
very rare occasions have I seen it done well, and even
then only very sparingly). I realize you must have put a lot
of work into it but it's really not worthwhile, IMO.

I think it's very impressive that this is only your second
AMV because it already shows potential: pacing and
theme are already there, which few (even experienced)
people seem to grasp. I'd also commend you in choosing
an anime series which I hadn't even heard about (but that's
probably my shortcoming :) The song was OK, I haven't
heard LP that much although I've noticed it's very, very
popular. I would really like to see more exotic anime/music
combos in general.

Anyway, I hope these comments are helpful, I think you're
off to a good start and maybe I'll see some other vid by you
soon...

Scrapped princess

How could I overlook that 4 days ago?

Anyway, the video itself was pretty nice done, though pointless.
Pointless because most scenes you used were random from the series. I could see a try of synching the lyrics, but it was kinda sloppy because the scenes used were originally absolutely not related to them (comedy scenes). The lipsynch could be way improved, especially the loud "I won't be ignored" part was bad. You could've made the whole AMV more based on one character because the song is about one person in fact. Maybe storyline-based as well. Try to get the meaning out of the songs more for your next AMVs.
Most of the Effects were pointless, too. I didn't see anything synched to the music with effects.
A good thing in this video was the Action. Most of the scenes worked well though I think the awesome fights against the peacemakers with the dragons could be used more. It gave me a hint how well the action of Scrapped Princess can be used, now I konw :)

Time to try something to this anime myself? :d
