Panasonic DVD Recorder

I was looking at the latest prices for the new Pioneer DVR-A05 DVD-R writer when a friend showed this to me:
http://www.epinions.com/Panasonic_DMR_E30S___DMR_E30K_Progressive_Scan_DVD_Recorder_DVD_Players/display_~latest_prices

It's a home-theater unit that Panasonic makes to record on DVD-R and DVD-RAM. They were going for $1000 a few months ago; now they're at $500-$600. That's only about 2X the cost of the A05.

For that you get a DVD recorder with a Firewire port and the usual a/v inputs, as well as a progressive scan DVD player. For use with AMVs, I assume you could run the TV-out from your PC into this box and make a DVD in close to realtime. No need to muck around with authoring software. Or for high quality, render the vid to DV/NTSC and do a print-to-tape straight into the E30's Firewire port. (Note: these are educated guesses since I don't own one.)

It's not as versatile as a PC-based writer, but you do get the progressive scan player, ease of use (??), and something that can record TV shows (Adult Swim) and camcorder movies. And for not that much more money if the price continues to drop.

No REAL computer hook-ups

I'd be a said monkey if I paid $500 and I couldn't make custom DVDs or make a DATA-DVD.

I'd still go with the internal drive.

DVD-R!! No! Evil! Stay far, FAR away. What you most likely want is a DVD+R(RW). +R disks play in all DVD players. The format is identical to common DVD Video. If you go -R you will wind up with some serious compatibility issues. Unless you plan on buying nothing but -R compliant Roms and players. Personally I don't have the kind of time and money.

...DVD-R is the data type of DVD media. DVD+R or RW is the Autoring version, the type you can burn DVD movies onto.

DVD-R/RW is the data, menaing you can burn say a 1GB HuffYUV master to disk.

They're two different forms ways to do the same thing. DVD-R & DVD+R are readable in MOST DVD PLAYERS. Yes it's true. It's a coin toss.

DVD-RW or DVD+RW. They're both readable in SELECT players that support their technology.

DVD-RAM is lame, but can hold up to 9GB+ and can be overwritten upto 100,000 times. Where as the others can only perform about 1,000 times.

DVD+RW is supposedly quicker at formating. However is is software that can make DVD-RW pretty close to it.

:\

We'll let the DVD Forum figure it it I guess. Well actually DVD-RW is a DVD forum spec and DVD+RW is something that a bunch fo manufactuers are allying to use.

I kinda like the sound of +RW. However, I don't have much need for re-writable media. I've used a CDRW disc maybe once.

Also let's point out that this is a home entertainment system. It's main purpose is to record peoples TV to a DVD. It's not meant for a computer. You're not going to be doing alot with this thing. :\

Oh, guys, come on now.
DVD-R/RW are the writable DVD formats backed by the DVD Forum. They came out first along with DVD-RAM. Compatibility of DVD-R is greater than +R at about 87% (87% of players can read them). +R claims to be technically more advanced and more compliant with the DVD-Video specs but it really has no advantage. The only other feature being pimped for +R is the packet writing capability, but this could easlily be implemented into -R as well. DVD-R media is the cheapest right now at as low as 63c ea.
DVD+R/RW is supported by the DVD+RW Alliance. +RW came out first (but later than -R and -RAM) and much hype was made over +R, which failed to deliver. +R/RW is most likely going to lose out in the end as far as the big format war goes, so I really don't reccomend getting one of these. -R however is proven and has maken itself standard among the DVD writable community.

Oh I forgot the compatibility of +R is about 83%
-RW compatibility is ~ 68% and +RW is also ~ 68%
