Pillington, bootleg DVDs are REGION FREE. Therefore, the region laws don't apply, if they even fucking exist.

Like EX said, it's illegal to own a bootleg DVD of an Anime series that hasn't been released here, since, you can import the R2 DVD from Japan.

Even though I own bootlegs, it's the only thing I can afford right now. I want the Evangelion R1 DVDs though..same with NTHT.

o my bad .. i reread the thread and missed this line
Just because it's "not available in your country" doesn't mean you have a right to own a version that's not produced by the original license holders.

even so .. is it still ok to import stuff if your country doesnt have it? (were talking as long as it was purchased from a legal liscensed vendor outside of the country .. one where it is possible to find copies.)
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

...if you get the R2 DVD of the Anime if it has or hasn't been licensed/released here, it's okay. Some companies (Like Manga and their WoH release) butcher the R1 release and make it crappy looking and shit.

But if you buy an HK bootleg (Clues: Region 0/Region Free and Chinese subtitles) it's illegal if it has or hasn't been licensed/released here.

It's illegal to buy a bootleg DVD...period. It doesn't matter if it's licensed or not, as the US and Japan are both members of an international copyright organization. Sorry, that line ain't gonna work on this board, and encouraging bootlegs violates the forum rules.

So what you’re saying is that: If I were to live in said country for say.... 6 months out of the year, and the other 6 months I spent back in the good old US of A. I would not be allowed by law to bring any of my movies, players, or any other form of media equipment back and forth with me. (Which is a situation ripped strait from reality. Think about it.) Thus is the inherent flaw on the part of the regioning laws. Thus is the reason even if I were to walk in and purchase from yon store across the border no one could stop me by any stretch of any law. Now if I were to order across the net, a series that has been licensed by someone in my country, then yes that would be illegal. In other words my Region 2 DVD player was purchased legally by a resident of the country, and given to me as a gift. Let the courts try to rip it for me. And all the R2 DVD's were purchased legally by said resident. No money was exchanged for said object therefore no bootlegging took place. There you go, loop-holes in the law. So maybe it's not so much legal, as it is not illegal. And yes there is a difference.

Don’t get wrong, I have done my (un)fair share of HK purchases, but for the most part I try to stay with in the bound of yon loophole. Just in case.

...it's not illegal if somebody buys a R2 DVD player for you in Japan and ships it to you in the US, and you bring it back and forth. Don't try and argue the law.

If you buy HK bootleg DVDs, it's illegal and called piracy, period. If you order R2 DVDs and an R2 DVD player in Japan and bring those to the US, it's perfectly legal. AFAIK, Ashton is going to be doing that when he comes back from Japan, as well as ErMaC did that.

I'm not arguing that region free imports are illegal. (For the purposes of clarity, Brain as we call him, co-ops in Hong Kong but often makes trips to Japan for job purposes. There he goes on mad spending sprees and returns 6 moths later with crinos gifts.). I am well aware of that fact. And I do not deny owning a few. The point I am trying to display is that no one can tell me not to import what I desire. Sure it was incorrect of me to purchase a DVD from a foreign source, when it is licensed by another in my country. But there is nothing that anyone can or will do. Now if my source were selling them to me, at a profit no less, then yes you would be correct in tell me that I am not. And I will not deny that I have paid for a couple DVD's hes brought back (Fushigi Yugi for example.) Yes it's some what illegal that I did pay a third party for the material. But much like scalping, is it really bootlegging if the third party makes not money of the deal? If so then yes, I have several (more) illegal purchased DVD's. And then I will just have find a new method. One way or another I will get what I desire semi-legally (not to be confused with illegally.)

And not that fatigue has officially set in I will retire. My arguments and my body. Settle it amongst your selves. Is Mr. Pilkington an immoral bastard or not?

When I got to register the thing rang out @ $29.99  (Price tag of $59.99!!) Fuck me running!!! I thought, but kept my damn mouth  shut for fear of loosing my golden opportunity. Quote this law, NicholasDWolfwood. Maybe you're confused by the Drug War propaganda that wrongly says that both a buyer and seller engaged in illegal activity are both equally guilty and need equal punishment, and that is being applied to other crimes. It is illegal to bootleg and sell DVDs, bar none. It is not illegal to buy said bootlegs. After all, from a legal standpoint, how are you, Mr. Average Joe Blow, supposed to know a real from a fake? You're being burned just as much as the makers of the original DVDs. Good luck proving this in court, or even getting it heard. Not to mention the legal cost of even filing the papers is probably worth more than the loss to the company.

Once again, you can buy an HK bootleg, and it is perfectly legal.

On the other hand, if Mr. Average Joe Blow were to buy a DVD copying rig and start selling discs out of his garage without permission or an agreement with the copyright holders, then a case could easily be made that Mr. Average Joe Blow is bootlegging and causing provable actual or potential loss to a company. Boom, a good court case.

Maybe I'm ignorant or something, but bootlegging as a term (and regarding legal matters) is only applicable to people who do the actual bootlegging (copying and cracking gangs in Hong Kong or Russia, for instance), as well. Like xerox, kleenex, and other brand names that have been converted into everyday terms, bootlegging has been corrupted into an all encompassing term for both the actual bootleggers and distributors, as well as the customers. This is inaccurate. A bootlegger is a person who illegally makes and distributes (for a profit, usually) an otherwise legal/regulated product, ONLY. A customer is, well, a customer, and can rarely be proven or held liable for what they buy.

But you can prove you have bootlegs.

Region Free, Chinese Subtitles, logo on the front, etc.
