yeh, thats the general consensus, what everyone feels the need to mention.

Ironically, I've dropped the price to $500.

You know how fast cars depreciate in value? Computers are like that - except more so. One could easily build something newer than that for less. If you can find someone that doesn't know this then sell it to them, but don't expect to get any more than $250 for it and not be ripping the person off.

I'd like to see someone build something like this in comparison for less than $500.

I was just curious if you could build it for less than $500 and since I ran the numbers I thought I might as well post them.

$500 seems reasonable for this rig.

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) - Your Price:$184.00

Asus Deluxe K8v $43

Sony NEC Optiarc 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Beige E-IDE / ATAPI Model 7170A-01 - OEM Your Price:$29.99

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card SB0350 Buy It Now price: US $45.00

ENERMAX Liberty ELT400AWT 400W Power Supply $69.00

HD (160gb): $ 53. (Pricegrabber)
Sound Card: $ 45. (Ebay)
P/S: $ 69. (Newegg)

Total: $569.

I made some assumptions and did not include tax or OS. Yep, you probably wouldn't be able to build this for less than $500.

It's not so much you could build this for less than $500 as it is you could build significantly better than this for just a tiny bit more. Also, used items are inherently less valuable to a buyer than new ones.

Or case.

One could easily build something newer than that for less.

I can never turn down a good challenge
here's what I built for under $500
Gigabyte AM2 mobo
Athlon 64 x2 4200 (AM2)
2GB Crucial dual-channel ddr2 800
Thermaltake 430W psu
XFX GeForce 7600GT (256MB gddr3 pci-e x16)
Seagate 250GB Sata 3.0Gbps
LG dvd super-multi (sata)
Sound Blaster Audigy SE
some Rosewill case to throw everything in

Total with shipping (before mail-in rebates):$554.28
total rebates: $72.00
Grand Total: $482.28

yeah, that doesn't give you much for a keyboard/mouse...and it doesn't include an OS, but there are some sacrifices that could be made to do that

Kariudo beat me to an actual system design (which I have to look into doing myself because my father's system just shit the bed after 5 years of being way behind the curb in terms of performance) but i'll spend a good 10 minutes looking.
