Tenchi In Tokyo Boxset @ Bestbuy.com - $23

Postby NeoQuixotic » Thu May 31, 2007 3:52 pm

For whatever reason Best Buy is selling the new thinpack boxset of "Tenchi In Tokyo" for $23 on their website. If you go in store, it is $40 and most customer service reps won't price match (bah!). So do in-store pickup to avoid the hassle, unless you enjoy pestering Best Buy employees :D. This deal is cheaper than anywhere else I've looked, plus this set is not even supposed to be out until June 19 !

Tenchi In Tokyo: Collection - $23

When I was at my local Best Buy, they also had the new Tenchi Universe and Movie set on the shelves. Once again not supposed to be available until June 19. However these aren't able to buy online, it only says pre-order and their pricing isn't the cheapest out there. But I'm gonna pick up the Movie set while I'm there cuz I got reward zone certs to spend. I'm such a tool .

I love raping Best Buy for dirt cheap anime !

They have a similar deal for Ai Yori Aoshi - eight DVDs, both series, for $49.95. I saw these in-store: they are the normal releases, not thinpaks, all eight bundled in shrinkwrap.

Yeah I saw that. I know a complete set was released, but all the DVDs in shrinkwrap just look stupid. If they are going to release a complete set, for the love of god give it some actual packaging please !

I assumed that Best Buy personnel did that kind of shrink wrapping although I have no proof of that.

Anyway, some people prefer to have the original DVDs since the thinpaks often lack some of the extras. I've never understood why they do that (i.e. re-cut the DVD image), but apparently it happens.

ADV does it to cater to a different customer who won't care much about extras over the actual show. It kinda sucks that to get the coveted clean OP and EDs you have to spring for at least one of the regular DVD version releases if you intend to purchase the thinpak to save some bucks. On the other hand, if you are one of those people who buy the regular releases and don't wait for the economy set, you won't feel as bad for dropping full coin for the DVDs. Financially, it would make more sense to just simply repackage your existing DVDs instead of paying someone to re-author the DVDs (content and menus) to eliminate a few extras. Not to mention the cost of pressing newer DVDs for the same title in addition to keeping the original versions in production.

On the subject of the Ai Yori Aoshi DVD set, I've seen the same shrink wrapped bundle sold at Suncoast/Sam Goody/FYE. And I agree that it should have some kind of packaging beyond shrink wrap. At least put an obi around the DVDs to advertise that it's the complete set. :|
