120GB Maxtor Hard Drive: $99

Postby Red Wolf » Sun Nov 24, 2002 2:18 pm

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 120GB Internal Hard Drive
Model: L01J120
7200 RPM
Ultra ATA/133
Buffer Size: 2MB
Average Seek Time: <9.1 ms

I found and bought this hard drive from my local Best Buy store this morning for $99. No mail-in rebates or coupons or anything, simply $99 cash (or check or credit) and I was out the door. I got the last one but I called for a friend this afternoon and that same store (Fayetteville, GA for those in the area) just got a new shipment in and they are keeping them at the same price. At BestBuy.com the same drive sells for $179. I would like to think the same deal is going on at other Best Buy locations but you may want to call ahead first.

You can check the drive out at BestBuy.com for specs but as I said this deal is not available online and it may only be at select stores.

Maxtor doesn't make the best high capacity drives out there but you simply cannot beat this price. I have seen 120GB hard drives on PriceWatch.com for $120 shipped but all of those were 5400 RPM drives. And considering I'm putting it into a FireWire enclosure for my iBook I don't care about the seek time or buffer.

Thanks for the notice...I didn't see this advertised anywhere. Went right down there and picked up two (one's for a friend).

It's scary...this forum has already saved me a couple of month's worth of ISP charges.

It wasn't on the ad flyer for my store, either. Out of curiosity where was the Best Buy you found the deal at? I'd like to see how wide spread this deal is.

BTW, they got a new shipment in at my local store but there are now only two drives left  A couple of friends kinda asked me to pick a few more up. I'll probably help them get rid of those two once I talked to a few people at work on Monday. I would love to get a second one for myself but I really don't have the need or the extra cash right now. Besides, I have to fork out another $55 for a FireWire enclosure for each drive. $160 for a 120GB FireWire hard drive rocks but it adds up a lot quicker.

I found mine at the Lynnwood Best Buy that's about 20 minutes north of Seattle. They had five of them; well, three after I left. That was at about 1 PM Sunday (local time).

I need to go looking for a drive kit, too. Maybe I'll go see if CompUSA still has those aluminum ones.

Hard to say without a flyer/advert, but the Best Buy sales cycle always runs from Sunday to Saturday. However, this is a holiday week, with Thanksgiving Day promotions starting up on Thursday. My guess is that the price is good until Wednesday night at least. Or until their stock runs out.

I would expect stock to run out long before the actual sales is set to end. This was the Maxtor hard drive self at my local Best Buy:

40GB - $104
60GB - $59 after mail-in rebate
80GB - $129
120GB - $99

Unless you know you only need the 60GB the 120GB is the best deal so everyone hard drive hunting from 40GB up will take up the offer.

I have learned that a similar deal is going on at CompUSA (probably why the Best Buy deal recently got started without notice). Here's the details from Deals On The Web:

CompUSA is offering the Maxtor L01J120 120 Gigabyte EIDE hard drive for $99.99 after a $20 instant savings and a $30 mail in rebate. The deal was sold out online as of this post, check with your local store for stock.

They went on to report that some local Best Buy stores are doing the $99 flat deal thanks to yours truely :D

CompUSA's online store has restocked the Maxtor 120GB drive for $99 after rebates. That price is after two $30 mail in rebates, both of which require the original UPC code (I would contact CompUSA to make sure a copied UPC is okay on one of the rebates). You can find the drive at:

I suggest waiting for the IBM Deskstar 180GXP. It should be less expensive than Western Digital and Maxtor drives of a comparable size and will have a three year waranty. Yes, it does have 8Mb cache for 120 GB and up drives

Although maxtor is preparing to release their new 250 and 320Gb hard drives, which should drive the cost down on a lot of the drive that are currently on the market.

You can get a general synopsis of the IBM 180GXP's performance here

Or you can go here to get the full review of the IBM 180GXP, courtesy of tomshardware.

320? damn. I haven't been keepin up on new tech out and coming out cause I can't afford it now. No need to make myself feel worse. But damn 320. Not really surprised, but I did have a question. You know the speeds on that? To me that much space on 7200 woulc be like having an 80 gig on 5400.
