I will buy the first anime release on Blu-ray domestically (US) unless it is a hentai title.

I think I have one of the first Pioneer (now Geneon) anime DVD releases in my library (Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi Muyo In Love, in it's glorious CD-case sized jewel case and cardboard sleeve!). I know that the first anime DVD released in the US was Battle Arena Toshinden, but I have an aversion to fighting-game-to-movie/video shows after the fiasco that was Street Fighter the Movie. Ugh.

I may even spring for a JP Blu-ray release if it is AIR...

AnimeOnDVD wrote:Air Demonstration on Blu-Ray (05:48 PM EST): Take a peek at this article about the Tokyo Animation Fair 2006 where the anime Air was shown on Blu-Ray. Note that bit rates used during the demo for it and the Prince of Darkness movie, all of which are in the high 30 Mbps to 40 Mbps. Several other titles are listed as being talked about but not specifically for release.

considering the fact that region coding is going to be different this time around.

I wonder how many Episodes theyll fit on a disk!

I mean I still find it amazing that they got so many episodes on DVD's like for
Blue Submarine No 6

and the fact they got a whole 2 episodes per disk on FLCL

What can they do with 25 gigs? 5 episodes mabey even six and only at a slight 200% increase in price!

I'll be astounded!

No! I thuroughly enjoyed paying for three disks for a total of six episodes!
I was absolutely euphoric to see that 13 episodes of Jojo's bizzare adventure was streched over 6 DVDs it was like being on 15 of the words best rollercoasters all at once!
It made me all happy and giddy like I was a magical man from Candy land, where i lived in a gum-drop house on Lollypop Lane!

Remember, Blu-ray is for High Definition video streams which will use more of that 25GB space than SD video (both encoded with MPEG-2). Especially if they decide to produce it as 1080p video and uncompressed 5.1 (or 7.1) surround sound audio. Of course, this probably still means that some companies will try to ream the customer with 2 episode discs.

As for 25GB Blu-ray recordable discs (BD-R) and recorders, um, I think I'll wait until the price drops way down to more resonable levels.

According to inside sources I talked to at Anime Detour, the industry is in no big hurry to get into blue ray or hd-dvd. There is to much of a format fight going on right now and hardware hasn't been delivered as promised. He thinks that the industry will soon be moving to a new format, a holographic card. Put the card in a slot and lasers read it with almost no moving parts. Best thing is they have put over a terabyte on the size of a credit card, with lots of room to spare.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Jeez... You do realize that you all have it good with an average of 4 episodes per DVD, right? In Japan, FLCL was released with ONE episode per DVD. On the other hand, by putting fewer episodes per disc, they usually leave more room for "digital omake" and for a higher video bitrate. But not only are there fewer episodes per DVD over in Japan, the DVD price is higher.

And I wouldn't take oldwrench's post above mine seriously. :D
