Blockbuster Online Rental

Postby narcted » Sun Jan 16, 2005 4:12 am

For a limited time Blockbuster is offering subscription for $14.99. This includes 3 discs out at a time, as well as two free rentals from a local Blockbuster store. They have 500 anime titles in their catalog. At the very least, you can trial them for two weeks free.

Just to add that the two in-store rentals are recurring. Each month you get two coupons. For some time I've been looking into greencine, netflix, and blockbuster online. Last months lowering in prices got me to choose Blockbuster.

My question (This one goes out to the mods, Site admin, and franky anyone interested) would it be considered unethical (well, if you go by the amv community's definition of "ethics") to rent anime and the rip it for source material?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question but since my question arrose from this thread, I'll put it here for now.

If this thread has to get locked, sorry.

Well, perhaps somewhat unethical, but you are at least paying something to the legal authorities for it (while returning the product for others to use).

As far as I know, this is done often. Just like borrowing from friends, while it is probably less encourageable than buying, it seems to be rather common and generally kosher around here.

yes its ethical because blockbuster pays the companies that produce videos for their right to give you the rights to use it the same way you would use it if you had bought it

Not true.

You are renting the DVD and the video contained on it. Just because you don't burn a DVD with it doesn't mean anything. It's considered stealing, and the FBI would have a field day with you.

No, it's considered piracy. Piracy is not theft.

I do the same thing with netflix, i rip the dvds onto my computer for the purpose of making amvs. But the program i use to rip isnt the greatest... it gets the job done, but i wouldnt try watching what i rip or reburning it. If i liked the anime, i still spend the money adding it to my collection. It just gets it on my computer faster through netflix, than it would buying the disks on my own and taking longer (due to the fact that im poor)!

Anyway, i guess what im trying to say is... i dont see anything wrong with it, if your using it for your own purposes... and not copying it!
