High speed Internet?

Postby Alpha_Hazard » Mon May 17, 2004 9:57 am

Alright, this is not exactly the best forum for this, but I figured I'd try...

I just moved into a new apartment, and there is a high speed internet connection, but through comcast it's 42.95 a month, which is absolutely outrageous, especially since I'm living alone right now...

does anybody know of other good providers? I checked out hgih speed dial-up, but that just compresses images, you still get the same slow download speeds for files and streaming media! Anyway...can anybody give some suggestions?

How much is Verizon DSL? I always see their commercials on TV around here (NJ) saying about how much better they are than Comcast, for this, that, and the other reasons.

Meanwhile, all Comcast's commercials ever say are "We just doubled the speed of our high-speed internet."

I think that's because Comcast's been raising some caps.

I live in Los Angeles. Verizon charges me $34.95 a month for DSL. It's not as fast in comparison to Cox Cable's cable internet in my neighborhood, but it costs less and adequately performs to my needs.

You can check Broad Band Reports for ratings and avaliablity of DSL in your area.

I have cable... RCN. It's included with TV and phone, so I don't know how much internet is separately. It's not the most reliable, but I've seen up to about 660 kb down and maybe 85 kb up. Note the download that fast is only for really fast sites and for about a second... videos here go up to about 500+ down sometimes.

I have SBC DSL. Works pretty well, and I believe the price is in the mid-twenties.

the good thing about the corporate connections I suppose is it's the same price pretty much everywhere, and you don't have to worry about disconnections and weird stuff happening. Plus you can ussually count on free stuff...like free months and free install, the cheapest broadband in FC is 40.00 plus 170 for install...

for how long, cause I have it too. I'm paying 24.95 for 5 months then it goes up to 50 something.

Verzion for me before Adelphia was 20 something then was going up to 34.95 after 3 months. I'd max out around 100 KB/s on DSL

Adelphia, mid to upper 200 KB/s.

If you really trust your neighbors and vice versa, one of you should get high speed and then you can all share the connection using wireless networking. (Yeah cables would work too, but I think it would look suspicious those cables running under doors and/or between houses/apartments.) Then you could agree to split the serivce bill.

*hugs cable modem*

I have InsightBB.. which is wonderful ;), though I do know that the cable big is an arm and a leg around 45.00 a month and the modem was free which is a good thing.. but I also have the option to get Sat. Internet if I ever move back out to the boonies where their is no cable..

But to your problem, Cable is the fastst thing out their unless you have the money to pay for a T1 connection and not many have them that fast.. the fastst that you can download is about 500kb a second which is not bad, a 150MB file only takes about 5 minutes to work..

And another thing, don't do the wireless thing.. I live in a small town and our county court house has wireless internet which is on all the time, and all you need is a laptop and a network card and you can get into their system.. Which is not a good thing, but they are a bunch of country bumkins, they don't know. Even though we have told them over and over, all they did was call up the community School Admin guy to come out and fix it.. and he didn't.

So if you go wireless, please lock down your system... Its not that expensive, if you know where to look.. hell look towards Yahoo, or Earthlink.. You never know..

I use comcast cable. It's expensive but it works great and is fast as hell. Ive seen a download peak at around 800. The speed depends on where you are downloading of course but you can download multiple files and have them all going at about 200 Kb/sec.

It's bandwidth to burn baby. 8)

oh GOD no! *shudder!* ever since *choke!* AOL *GAG!* baught out Earthlink they have turned to crap. sad since for a time Earthlink was the premier of providers. *sigh* as with all (or at least Most) good things it seems, it goes the way of the Dodo.
