Postby Bebop0083 » Wed Mar 24, 2004 9:03 pm

im looking for some cheap TDK DVD rs that are extra play meaning over the 4.7 GB range. i cant seem to find any besides thoughs. i know theres at least 9 GB dvd rs of them but there helluva expensive and there only 5 packs. ehhhhhh. TDK DVD RS seem to be the only ones thatll play on my dvd r as well as PS2 apparently. so if any one knows where i can find some extra play dvd rs thatll be great. thanks in advance.

i though the dvd9's were dule layer disks and u couldnt burn them yet becouse the dule layer dvd burner isnt out for consumer market yet. as for the TDK dvdr's only playing on your reader well i dont know what the problem is there but there is definitly something wrong with the way ur burning them or the way u have it all set up. www.newegg.com has dvd5's (4.7gb) for like $45 they might have TDK its worth a look

The only consumer level burn-able media out right now that can hold that much data are some double-sided disks. Dual format disks should be out by the end of the month. These would require compatable hardware to burn.

I don't know what you mean by TDK Extra Play discs... The TDK website doesn't list them. Were they discontinued? http://tdk.com/recmedia/dvd/index.html

Ulead has announced their software will support burning of DVD 9. I've only known about the hardware requirements for dual layer. Not sure right now what role the software will play, but I guess it's nice to know.

I've always been kinda skeptical about discs claiming they're extended play. Discs right now claiming they'll hold 4.7 GB is kind of a stretch, considering most manufacturers are using the decimal number system to get that count. To a computer, since they use binary number system, that actual number is 4.37 GB. No manufacturer would ever state the actual truth, since their competition is going to claim 4.7 GB (Base 10) and anyone who would correctly label their disc as 4.37 GB (Base 2) is going to be outsold.

Then you add that the DVD disc design supposedely has the potential to hold has much as 18+ GB. I'm not sure how those claims can be made. I'm think quadruple layering or a smaller laser? It's all just a conspiracy to keep us buying the newest products over time.

The way I've always heard it explained is:

DVD-5 - Single sided, single layer
DVD-9 - Single sided, dual layer
DVD-10 - Dual sided, single layer
DVD-18 - Dual sided, dual layer
