Free Hosting Services

Postby Kracus » Mon Jan 05, 2004 3:18 pm

Hey, I don't know if anyone mentioned this. But I was sent a link to 3 years of free hosting service. No strings attached.

500mb store
5 or 4 gigs of bandwidth

www.1and1.com

ends on the 24th

The damn registration process keeps changing my city... I live on an Air Force base and it doesn't recognize that :/

...I guess I'll just let it go for now and continue through the registration

Thats where I have my current site for my vids up. Gonna either get another contract for another 500 mb and host a design site or just add it on to the other. Not sure yet.

Although I don't care for their control panel, they are missing one thing I love and that's file management. My other hosting service has it, why can't they, unless its hidden.

Cause when I'm at work I can't access the files, have to wait til I'm at home on FTP.

dokool - I'm guessing you've had the service longer then I, do you know of a file management option in the control panel? Or do you just FTP everything?

It wouldn't let me register as J.J., had to use my full name  . Oh well, this is pretty sweet, though.

Um, the people who signed up for the promotion: how long did it take them to E-mail you after you entered your PIN?

I realized I entered it in the wrong format the first time so I did it exactly as it says on the site and I was contacted within ten minutes

Sorry I thought for some reason you were asking about the phone call. As for the email... I got it shortly after entering my pin.

They refused to acknowledge that my house exists; they kept automatically changing it to some other street, of the existence of which I'm unsure... I just let them think I was where they apparently thought I should be. Their loss if their snail mail can't reach me, I say. :)

Also, I kind of wish that there was a bandwidth meter somewhere in the statistics section, so I could get a feeling for how far over the free 5 GB/month I'm going to go.

Also, I think they're really trying to get you to register a domain name through them... they give you an impossible-to-remember subdomain (as well as impossible-to-remember numerical IDs), and advertise that you can get a domain name from them for only $6/year. By the way, is that a good deal on the domain names? It seems ridiculously cheap.

$6 is pretty cheap; $10 to $15 is typical, although some hosts provide it for free when you sign up.

If you want to compare this plan to others, this site reviews cheap, but reliable Web hosting services. Except for the fact that it's free, this 1and1 service is not all that great, especially w.r.t bandwidth.

And a bandwidth meter would be nice.

Impossible IDs are nothing. I just saved the E-mail and used Cjb.net free URL redirection. Problem solved.
