Anime Rental Stores

Postby narcted » Sun Oct 12, 2003 4:27 am

I was just wondering if people needed help finding places that RENT a decent anime inventory. Such places always seem to be difficult to find. I know two good places to rent.

Redondo Beach, CA:Disc Is It $2.50 for one night. $3.50 for up to 5 days.

New London, Connecticut: Sarges Comics $3.00 for 2 days $5.00 for 5 days

Feel free to add.

Rentertainment. I know there's one on campus here, and they've generally got a decent selection. There's also one at the University of Illinois campus.

And, surprisingly, Blockbuster. Not in all places, but they're expanding. The one back home has most, if not all, of Berserk; the two Eva movies; some Cowboy Bebop; and a bunch of various movies.

Sorry for double posting-there wasn't edit option, but I just remembered about Greencine and Netflix. They're reliable, cost only 15 to 20 bucks a month, you get around 4~6 anime a month. You have to wait like a week for it though

There's a really really cheap place in Austin, TX called Neko Neko Anime. Has a really big DVD and VHS selection for rent. Along with bubble tea and a DDR Extreme machine. Pretty awesome.

And in San Antonio, TX there's Excalibur Comics. They have a pretty nice rental selection as well.

I live in Indianapolis, IN now and apparently there's an anime rental place but I havent been over there yet as it's not on my side of town.

The best way to do this is GreenCine (http://www.greencine.com). They have damn near every anime DVD that has been commercially released here in the US. All the convenience of NetFlix (well, with a few less distro centers), with many, many times the anime selection.

I finally caved and subscribed to Greencine a few monthes ago. Thanks for pointing them out. I like them. They carry many of the titles my local store was not carrying. I still go to Disc Is It, my local store. Just more convinient and it's on my way home from work.

If anyone is interested in trialing Greencine for two weeks, you'll need to enter a promotion code into the registration area. Promotion code: friend

You don't need a code to trial NetFlix.

In North Dallas, there is a cool little store called Anime Pop off of Midway and Beltline. When La Familia comes down for A-Kon or AnimeFEST, we usually make the trek up there. They have an excellent selection of DVD's for rent and used DVD's to buy. :D

In the San Gabriel and West Covina areas in South CA, there's an awesome anime store/rental store called Orbit comics where they pretty much have every single region 1 anime dvd to rent plus some HK's. Plus they get most dvds before best buy and suncoast gets them and sell them for less than retail. I've pretty much gotten 75% of my anime collection from them :)

Prices:
Normal days - $2 per dvd, $4 for new releases, Limit 4 max. Date you return them is dependant on how many dvds you rent. (Rent 2 dvds, you get 2 days to return them)
Wednesday Special: $1 per dvd, $2 for new releases, Limit 4 max. Must always return dvds the next day.

New releases stay that way for a month after the store gets them in and must always return them the next day.

My advice is always go to Orbit on wednesday ;)

For region 2's, there's a place called Video Japan in Torrance, South CA with a pretty decent selection. I've gotten some R2 Naruto, Panyo Panyo Digi Charat, Gundam Seed, and some other stuff. Only problem is they take forever to get Naruto :( They seem to always keep getting new Gundam Seed in though.

Prices: 3 bucks per dvd, 5 days, no limit on dvds.

If you live in the Pasadena area of South CA, Do not pass these places up!

In Seattle the place to rent is Scarecrow Video. Their anime inventory is listing 3216 titles in VHS and DVD format.

They specialize in the hard-to-get and out-of-print titles; e.g. they have tapes of Unico. These are usually rented "by approval only", meaning you'll have to pre-sign a credit card charge or leave a check for about $500. (Yes, that's five hundred!) If you don't bring it back, you lose the $$$.

They also sell DVDs at 5% to 10% off. Unfortunately, some of the titles they have are obvious HK bootlegs, but not many.

Several years ago I saw a collection of anime tapes for rent at the Hollywood Video at 196th and Aurora (Lynnwood). The large number of tapes was unusual for a mainstream rental store. Might be worth checking out if you live nearby.

So I was thinking this looked like kind of a dumb thread. I mean good idea, but really what's the odds that anyones really lives near any place anyone mentions.....Then I look at the first one posted (Redondo Beach) and realize it's about 3 miles from my place. OK, now I feel stupid. So I'll contribute, there's place in Torrance, House of Movies, at 1047 W Carson. They're a comic book shop/anime video rental place. It's been a while since I was in there, but they had 100+ anime titles to choose from. There's also a Japanes video rental place just up the street at Carson and Western.

At least you all live near a place that actully know what Anime is! But to be fair..

The Movie Gallary in Salem, INDIDNA (thats right Salem, IN!) does have some Anime, not alot. Infact I have rented it all! They also sell some Anime, but at 29.99 for one disk that only has 4 ep, go a few hours out of your way and your in New Albany or Jeffersonville, where you can find it cheeper.

O yes, if you ever go into the MG in Salem and ask for Anime, they will ask if its a new release and then send you to the "A's" in the DVD section in which to search for "Anime" (dubasses thought it was the name to a movie!) I will say one thing for them though, since I have been going their, they have steped up ording Japanse/HK films.. now only if they will do that with the Anime. All will be good..
