Cendyne Dual-Format DVD-RW Drive

Postby TaranT » Tue Jun 10, 2003 3:15 am

This drive appears to be identical with the Sony 500ULX (which was discontinued?). But it sells for approx. $150 less than the Sony.

It's in-stock (tonight) at mwave.com and buy.com for about $250 (Cendyne model #CDICD00227). Even though it's in an external drive kit configuration, that price is still $50-$100 cheaper than the Sony IDE/internal version (500A).

The drive kit has both USB2 and Firewire capability. DVD write speeds are 4X for -R/+R and 2X/2.4X for -RW/+RW (16X/10X for CD-R/RW). Software and tutorials are included.

I am still not seeing the point of the dual format drives. Neither format is %100 compatible with all drives/stand alone players. The only factor I see is that it leads to less confusion when buying media since you can get either.

You can get a Teac 4X DVD-R/RW drive for $166 w/ shipping or a NEC 4X DVD+R/RW drive for $151 w/ shipping off Pricewatch.

Anyways, if you desire a dual-format drive, this does look like a good deal :P

I agree: dual format capability doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference. Some people want the flexibility, though.

Unless I'm mistaken, the drives you listed are internal IDE units. If you add the price of an external USB2/Firewire drive kit - about $50 to $100 - you're getting close to price of the Cendyne. The dual format feature is then either free or very cheap.

;_; External drives suck though.

But it looks like a external version of the NEC can be had for $209 and a external version of the Teac can be had for $220 :D

!: O But they could be from ~shadey~ companies. Mwave is a good company ;o

Correction......

One of the guys at work ordered this drive from buy.com: they sent him a drive that only does +RW even though the part number was what he asked for.

Best I can tell, the Cendyne press release gave bad information that filtered down to the e-tailers:
...The CenDyne 4X Dual-Format Combo Interface USB 2.0/Firewire DVD Recorder (model #CDI CD 00227) is offered at an estimated retail price of $399....
source

The #0227 part is actually only for +RW - making it less of a good deal that it appeared to be.
