PLEASE HELP! IM DESPERATE

Postby chibi_kagome » Sun Feb 02, 2003 5:00 pm

A few weeks ago I bought some Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars DVDs from a guy on ebay for $100. They just arrived a couple days ago. I only bought them so I could make a nice quality Sailor Stars music video. Well, after the DVDs finally arrived I was so happy, but then to my deep regret, I found out that for some really weird reason, neither of my 2 computers can read the DVDs as being anything. It's no different than if I hadn't put them in at all *i've put them in the D drive and the E drive but the computer doesnt read them as being anything* I tried them in my PS2 and they work, i tried them in my DVD Player for my TV and they work, but when I try to play them on my either of my computers *both have DVD players built in them* nothing happens. I've tried playing them through various DVD player softwares and also Windows Media Player but still nothing. I even tried opening them up from My Computer but my computers can't read them AT ALL. I tried e-mailing the guy I bought them from and asked for my money back but he said he was moving and he couldnt do anything about it. So now I'm stuck w/ these DVDs that I can't rip to my computer since my computer can't read them. Please, if anyone has an idea about how I can maybe record the DVDs to something else that I can rip to my computer etc. please please please post! I would be eternally grateful. Ja Ne!

You could probably capture it with a video capture card instead of transferring it to another medium as you are going to lose quality...but capture cards can do ok.

If you are absolutely sure that both (this seems kinda odd) drives on your computer are dvdroms, then maybe they are just really crappy drives. Since you can play them on a dvd player you know they work.

Regions can't be the problem, because though your dvd player might be mutli region, I highly doubt your PS2 is anything but R1.

I would ask what kind of dvd reader program you used but if you tried a bunch...then maybe the programs aren't installed correctly? If other dvds work fine in the dvd-roms then I am just baffled.

well, to rip a dvd, you don't necessarily have to watch it.

If your dvd drives work enough to at least 'see' the files you can at least try to rip.

Check out the guides and give it a try before you try another method.

i already tried to rip them but my computer cant detect the files at all. i've never had this kind of problem before which is why im so lost lol. i've also never captured any footage or used any other method of getting footage for music videos. it's the only reason i spent the money on them. do you happen to know if its possible to rip footage from vcds?

VCDs are in an mpeg format. They are compressed when you are making a vcd, that is how several hours worth of video can fit on them.

I am not sure how exactly you would make the vcd if you can't extract the video files in the first place but to try and edit an mpeg...well it works but it won't look pretty.

If you choose to capture, you run the dvds off your dvd player, use a video capture card, and depending on the card you use...footage can look ok but it's not going to be rip quality. I make my amvs using a capture card and send high quality versions to cons, so this is fine. But it's going to cost you extra...assuming you don't already have one. I assume not :)

The other thing you can do is go to google, type in your dvd-rom drive type and look for forums and help related to the drives. It may be a problem with them and if other people have it...maybe you can learn something that'll help you fix the problem.

What type of dvds are these? I'm assuming HK dvds since they dont seem to have a region code.

They said it worked on their PS2...meaning it has to be R1. And I didn't think a PS2 could read vcd or divx files.

errr...I meant as opposed to an R2.

I guess Hk dvds come in multi region huh.

But even then, shouldn't a dvd rom be able to find the files if you explore the dvd... even if it won't play?

I've actually had this happen to me a few times before. My advice to you would actually be to try again later. It's really weird, but my DVD drive just doesn't read certain DVDs as well as others. I'm not really sure what causes it, but usually your computer will eventually be able to read the DVDs if you keep trying. So, reboot your computer, or wait a few days, and try again!

You can also try cleaning the DVDs for fingerprints... that's how I fixed the problem with this one FF9 disc. Clean the DVD really well with a soft cloth and the drive might be able to read it better.

I hope this will help fix your problem!

I know this will sound like a really random question, but what color is the read surface of the DVD? Because some computers or even CD players won't read sertain colors.

For instance, my discman won't read CDs with blue or dark read surfaces. And whil the DVD drive at home will read Playstation CDs for ripping, the one on my laptop won't because it's a black read surface.

HKDVDs do NOT come in different regions. They're region0/region free, that's it.

One thing could be that your firmware won't work with R2 DVDs if these are R2's, so email the seller of the DVDs and ask what Region they are.

They almost certainly aren't region 2 dvds if they work in a PS2. I'm assuming that its an american PS2. Also they can not be region 1 dvds, as Sailor Stars is not released in Region 1.
