A video made entirely from after effects?

Postby James Sharp » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:34 am

You have my apologies if this is a stupid question. but I have been doing some reading and from what i can tell it is entirely possible to make your entire music video from scratch all in after effects.. is this true?

If so what is the point of premire even existing.
Close calls are always the most exciting. Coming close is always the most dissapointing.

My newest vid:

I welcome any and all advice on how i can improve

Because editing in after effects for your main stuff is clunky and fucking annoying comparedly.

It's the same reason why people use PhotoShop/GIMP for making pictures, when they could have simply used MS Paint and do it pixel by pixel ;x

This.

Basically it's because both programs are meant for two entirely different things. Premiere is intended for doing you basic editing/compositing, while After Effects is designed for taking projects where the heavy editing has already been done and adding effects/titles/etc. You CAN edit from scratch in AE, just as you can also do quite a few effects in Premiere. The problem is that you're making it quite a bit more difficult and time consuming.

Honestly, as a Premiere guy, I can say that the timeline in Premiere is much more appealing for an AMV workflow than the timeline for AE. It is of course POSSIBLE as you put it to edit videos entirely in After Effects, just not really all that efficient. You have to consider the project you're making: if it's more effect intensive and doesn't require too many cuts on your part, maybe After Effects would be better. If you have an AMV with a ton of cuts in it, and you need your sync to be incredibly precise, Premiere might be the better option.

Of course, you can edit in Premiere and then import your Premiere project into After Effects.

I heard this before and agree. "Music sync in After effects is the 8th ring of hell."

I need to get premier. I have been trying to get sony vegas to work with AE, but they arent very compatible. Vegas and premier are made for, and are the best to use, to do the actual editing. Placing clips in the timeline, correcting the sync, etc. After Effects adds the effects, transitions, etc. They work together. Theyre like 2 parts of a single program.

There isnt too much that I can add. If anybody knows how to import a project from vegas to ae, please tell me. -.-

Make cuts, render lossless, import into AE :<

In other words, if you're thinking of making a slideshow with just stills, it had better be the flashiest damn thing ever made

I'm actually going to break in and defend AE as an editor. I've got an NLE laying around, but it's gotten to the point where it's just better to edit entirely in AE (haven't used my NLE in about a year).

Basically, every cut you make gets its own layer. So instead of editing on 4 or 5 tracks it'll be closer to several hundred. (Though this is perfectly managable if you make smart use of nested comps) Also, you must do a Ram-preview in order to watch the track. (basically means it has to buffer for a few seconds.)

Now as for why I like it —and this may be just me— but the slower editing really makes you think about what cuts you're making. It prevents over-editing, and keeps one's mind focused on the bigger picture. On the flip side, frame accurate editing's very easy. File management, effects (duh), and workflow are all very nice. It's just..slower,

Naturally if you enjoy very intensive editing techniques like strobing and such, by all means use a NLE (though I usually end up achieving the same effect through some recursive editing BS) NLEs still reign king 'cause, well, that's what they do. But AE is still a perfectly effective editor, even for non effects based work.

Yes it's effective, but it's just more of a pain in the ass. That's just how it is.

I don't use After Effects (editing on a budget ftw ^^) but I've seen a few AMVs done entirely with AE and they were awesome  probably hard to do though :|

 editing non-nle is something all editors should try at least once though :p seriously if you think the feeling of an accomplished video is large you do NOT know :p My first video was totaly in VirtualDub and a stopwatch.

Hey, I actually managed to make VDub do fades (not very good fades, but nonetheless), but I digress. But I've not edited a video in VDub since May 2003.

I edited Fate Against Will in AE, as that was the only way that I'd ever hope to make it look good at 720p60, or heck, look good at all. I used a really dirty trick to make it work, though - I actually edited at 24fps, and only adjusted all the project settings to 60fps at the end. As it was entirely made up of stills, I didn't have to worry about the problems that could have arisen by doing that, had it been video (and because of how it was, it actually is true 60fps). Still an extremely rudimentary vid, but the control AE gave was much more suited to the task than Premiere was.
