The thread title would of been a more interesting topic IMO...

I don't think editing has any effect on anything like this. It has more to do with personality.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Stupid question. Gratuitous thread.

The answer is yes.

I'd like to believe that this hobby attracts the sort of people who see (and hear) the world just a little differently than everyone else, but the tracks that most editors choose definitely suggests otherwise. I know I need to just get over it already but I'm continually let down at the lack of variety and surprises in the kind of music that I find both here and on the 'tube. I don't get the sense -- at least not as often as I'd like to -- that the editor is "feeling" the music or has chosen it for any reason other than a surface-level thematic connection to the video source. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed videos employing traditional or mainstream rock and pop songs: I'm still surprised at how some truly gifted editors here are able to breathe new life into music that I otherwise would never have given the time of day to on its own. Maybe a lot of AMV makers have an honest and deep appreciation of music but I haven't seen a lot of evidence that most have any kind of superior sense of rhythm, at least no more than the average person. I'd love to be proved wrong, though.

What a rockist post this is. People can have experiences every bit as emotional, cerebral, and genuine while listening to beat-oriented music as they can while listening to progressive rock, classical music, or whatever genres or sounds you have a personal affiliation for. I don't know if you're referring to most people's ideas of "techno" here (i.e. progressive trance, diva house, Cascada, etc.) or all sequenced electronic music but I just think that's a disturbingly dismissive statement to make.

Now downloading "The Wasteland" and looking forward to it, btw.

Just for the record: I occasionally like being a pretentious ass, especially about music. I have my own hang-ups on that, so don't take me too too seriously, it only increases my ego :P

I think the caveat of 'good editors' specified in the OP is missing in your analysis. Of course, taken to it's correct conclusion, that's a bit like saying "hobbyist painters are pretty good at choosing colors" and "stunt drivers are pretty good at avoiding or surviving crashes" in the level of "no shit" responses that should immediately spring to mind.

I'd say there are editors who edit and watch amvs with the rhythm in mind, and editors who edit and watch amvs with different things in mind.

It just means that the two types of editors will have a different opinion on the same work. The one type will be really moved by a piece that follows the dynamics of the music nicely, while the other type won't be able to appreciate it at all, maybe because they feel the scenes don't follow the lyrics as closely as they'd like.

I wanted to make this topic since last year, when I was with some AMV-editors in Chicago at a concert.

I grew up in a home filled with music. My mother sang. My siblings and I all learned to play the piano. We all sang in the church choir and I joined the band in school (my siblings joined the choir.) For me I have always enjoyed making the music, and as such I prefer to listen to music for the melody, rhythm, harmony, ect more so then the lyrics (while I do enjoy lyrics and singing them from time to time.) I always have music playing. For me silence is just deafening. I sleep to music, wake up to music, spend my day listening to music, even my memory is triggered by music.

I usually really get to know a song before I sit down to edit it. I know it's in's and outs, it's melody, harmony, beat, the different parts, instruments, quirks of the singer(s) voice, ect. I generally get my AMV ideas from listening to a song that really pulls on me in some way. I'll sit in my chair or lay down on my couch with the lights off and my eyes closed and let the music shape my imagination. It's from there that I choose the source(s) and what the video would be about and what kind of video it would be.

I can't speak for other people, but what really drew me to AMVs was the music and how someone can add the video to it in a way that enhances the music. I admit, I'm a fan of many videos that most would consider horrible (video quality and editing wise) all because of the music used. I sing, dance, bob my head, tap my feet, ect. while watching AMVs. I'm sure any of you who have been around me in the VAT at ACEN or AWA or otherwise will have seen this. Not sure if this makes me a better editor then anyone else, but at least for me I appreciate the music.

tl;dr... maybe?

With the right person sex can be quite sophisticated :? Thus, you can also have sex to sophisticated music then.

There are different ways to sync to a song. How an editor uses the syncs and its outcome is subjective.

This thread makes me wonder where the photos of Extreme Iron Editor from this year went.

I see the music video editor as another member of the band. Each player has a part to play and it must be done in perfect time with the other band members otherwise is discordant rubbish.

I am a musician, however, not not a great one, but my knowledge of timing helps tremendously. If the song is in 4/4 then I set scenes in blocks to match that 4/4 time.

I think the most valuable thing for an editor is 'feeling' and a sense of timing.
