Commenting system outdatted?

Postby OropherZero » Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:44 am

So lately I've been thinking about how outdatted the commenting system for an AMV is. I don't know how complex the code for .org is, but why not consider these changes:

1. Instead of quick comments and having it appear on your login page, why not have a public one on the video description page below the download link bar where registered users can quickly leave a comment and view other comments?

2. Why do you have to OP a vid to be able to read more than 3 detailed opinions of it? Sometimes you think you may as well leave a dummy OP to read the rest.

Alternatively opinions can stay reasonably private but quick comments should be publicly visible, like the AKROSS site and blogs. Hell if I could read more of the quick comments then maybe I can decide better if I want to dl something or not, or challenge the comments of others. Let the creator decide if he or she wants to delete a specific comment if it turns into a flame war.

Why? Only about 1 in 10 QC's actually says anything at all about the video. Most of them are little more than a chance for people to insult others without the consequences of their name being known, fucking pussies. It's not even like they're funny insults.

No, just no.

If the creator thinks the quick comments are ridiculous enough, they have the option of showing them in the video info instead. But would we really want a "youtube commenting system", which would kill off most of the useful opinions in favor of small public comments along the lines of "cool video, brah" "OMG I LUVED THS IS THE BEST ACTIOOON VIDEAH VEAAR" "I'm not your brah, chap" "this video sucked. 1/5" "fuuu i lost OP"? Let these be hidden so some real opinions can be in their place, to seek to actually criticize the video and potentially improve the editor.

Comments are for the editor. There's no reason for anyone else to even see them.

And, yes, being able to see other OPs on a vid after you OP it kinda irks me as well... =/

Quick comments in general killed off most opinions anyway. :| People are lazy.

Yeah, opinions have been mostly dead for awhile, unless you go barter for one in the opinion exchange forums. I do believe the system is outdated, I'm just not sure if Youtube-style commenting is the answer. Still, it's the best solution that's been offered yet, and it's not /that/ bad.

most comments are already like youtube comments, except some are longer. I have a few that would fill up pages of just the same phrase over and over again. Either way it's a pretty useless system. I don't care either way.

I saw QCs as the death of OPs when it happened. I won't use local until they are removed. Thus, I would very much be against any sort of public commentary system. If I don't want private QCs, what the heck makes you think I'd ever want PUBLIC QCs?

It's not a bad idea to discuss. So far I can only say that qc should stay qc and what you're suggesting should be something else. I don't want qc comments to be shown as comments. They where never meant to be this way.

I like looking at other ops if I wish to submit a well thought out one. Just in case they catch something you missed. Also it's a nice ego boost when you catch (a few) something nobody else did :). If I happen to be making an op that's NOT too well thought out I tend to scan the other ops too to gather clever insults and edit them in.

Without this I would be VERY sad :(

If they were to be public and anonymous just like the QC, I would imagine the same but in public (flaming in public, that is). Probably, the fact that it would show the username would stop some people from throwing up senseless shit to the video.

I propose a method to replace QCs in which videos are rated according to a variety of categories, to lessen the abstraction of the star system. I like the 5 star system where 3 average, but think more stars would be better. Perhaps 10, with 5 being the average. Also, add fields so that people can be all the more specific if they feel is needed.

We should give the editor the option to display a sampling of these ratings, to demonstrate how some other viewers felt about the video, so people can see if the video sounds good right on the profile. We could display an average of all the responses to give a quick idea, I'm thinking with elimination the extreme values to bypass over enthusiastically good or bad replies.
