Where can AMVs be hosted for free?

Postby Frosty555 » Mon Jan 27, 2003 10:52 am

I've already searched here and found several threads regarding this issue, however no answers were posted. Perhaps none exist. Oh well. Here's my breakdown

An AMV Shareable Web Host Must Give You:
Ability to upload MPGS or AVIs
+50 megs of storage space
+3 gigs monthly
No Filesize Limits
Free.

Anyway, these are the places I've found so far:
Moobies.net --> These guys just have so much potential, but their ftp upload doesn't work! :(

NerdCities.com --> 100 megs, no limits on size or bandwidth! What more could you ask for? Well, maybe a working sign up page...

Spaceports.com --> No filesize limits. You get 20 megs to start and you can apply for more. Problems? Well, most of the time they don't accept an application that says "i wanna host my AMV".

Streamload.com--> These guys specifically SAY that you can share your anime videos with them! Isn't that great? Downsides? Well, you kinda need to pay for it too. :(

Fanimenation.com--> They are so close to being what I'm looking for. But they only let you send them zip files, and their upload service is temporarily down for the next 2 months.

AnimeMusicVideos.org--> You guys! The perfect place to put your video... except you don't upload, you link. Oook, well... a good place to ADVERTISE your video! Yay!

IS THERE NO PLACE ON THE INTERNET WHERE YOU CAN HOST!?

This is your lucky day. Check the Golden Donut section of the forums for details on AMV's hosting solution.

There's another downside to moobies.net in that your video will be reencoded into .WMV format if it isn't already. It's definately a smaller file size, but there will be a loss of quality as a result.

Streamload isn't extremely expensive, although it's not a free way to distribute your files. I pay them about 5 dollars a month, as there's no way I can download more than 1 gigabyte worth of videos in a month due to my limited HDD space. But yeah, Streamload is mainly for /storage/ not really for distribution.

So, as mentioned before, your only real option is to wait for the Golden Donut to get really up and running where everybody can upload for free, and that will be in effect all the sooner if more people donate. (Even if it's just 1 dollar for the entire year. :D)

As soon as I seen the topic these words came to mind:

No such thing as a good free host. Creating Anime Music videos is a thankless expensive hobby. Was you understand this everything will be alright.

first thing I thought of was the sticky thread at the top of the page that clearly deals with this question.

I try to help some people out with hosting since I have WAY too much space to spare on my server. I don't even come close to my host's bandwidth limit of 50 gigs/month, *sigh*... All anyone has to do is ask me and I'll try to see what I can do (at least until the Golden Donut is up and running)... oh well...

It IS posible to get free hosting. Its usually either: not enough space or too little bandwidth. Ive spent almost a year looking for free space, and then i found it! www.imagestation.com The ONLY downside is: the videos cant be any bigger than 40MB, other than that its perfect!

Ya can always solve disk storage problems by starting up an FTP server for your videos. Hosting is free since you supply it yourself, you just have to buy a seperate hard drive for the server. But, you still have bandwidth to worry about. Get DSL or cable, and there ya go.

Sound too good to be true? It is. I checked this out, and found it to be a service of Sony, which does not have the world's best track record on tolerating fair use. Then there's these sections from their agreement:

[clipped]
4. Member Content; Member Private Area; Community Area

You agree not to post, send, transmit, upload, display, publish or distribute through any part of the Site, any Member Content that:

(a) Uses materials of others that are protected by copyright, trademark or trade secrets, patent or other intellectual property law without the express permission of the author or owner;

(c) Violates anyone's copyright, moral rights, author's rights, trade secrets, trademark rights, patent, or other intellectual property or other rights;

6. License Grant and Intellectual Property Rights
In consideration for the Service, and the potential benefits related thereto, you grant ImageStation, its successors, licensees and assigns, a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty free license to use, modify, reproduce, distribute, publish, publicly perform, and publicly display your Member Content, by all means now known, or later created, including but not limited to display on the Internet, and in all forms of media, now known or later created.

So it's perfect; until your videos become popular enough for them to notice a bandwidth spike and ban you for violating ToS, or until they decide to sell your content and not pay you for it. Why on earth would anyone use this service unless they didn't read this license? I get so much interest as it is *without* direct downloads that I wouldn't be able to use this long for AMV hosting, and reading that #6 there's no way I'd ever consider something like this for all-original content.

:lol: :lol: My crap aint worth nuthin! So why would they choose my crap over someone elces stuff to sell? And frankly i dont care, i do this for fun, not cuz im gunna get anything form it. So to me, this is next to perfect. And if they do ban me, woopty doo, i'll just find another free server.

To answer my own question... I FOUND A PLACE!! God bless Sony, you guys have my blessings.

OK, here's how it works, SONY has a site called http://www.imagestation.com which is a place for you to host images. You can put your image in an album and email it to friends for their viewing pleasure. The thing that separates imagestation from the rest is that you can also upload videos. NOTE, this isn't a workaround or a bug exploitment, they actually TELL YOU that you can upload videos. Videos may not be greater then 40 megs in size (which is plenty for most videos under 4 minutes). Now for the really cool part. There are NO overall space limits. Sony gives you "unlimited" space, and they advertise it. All you have to do is put a link up to your album (has to be indirect, but that's OK!), and you're all set to go!

This place actually worked! It's unbelievable! Listen, at least to me, this sounds like what EVERY AMV newbie is desperately looking for, so I'm going to post a thread sticky for it, k?
