Anyone know any free programs???????

Postby ChaosVirus » Mon Jan 27, 2003 8:30 am

I have read the how to make sticky, and other guides, but I cannot seem to find any free programs for making them, I do not care if it is rubbish, as long as it lets me make my first video.

You may say then this person should buy one, but unless I know I can make at least make one, then there is point buying one, another point is that I am only 16, and I have no money to buy a £300 program like abobe's one

So does anyone know a free program that will allow me to make my first video.

Adobe has a trial version of Premiere that will give you 30 days. Enough time to make your first video, I would think.

Good luck!

There also is he free OS option of Linux which has some free utillities if your willing to look for them. Some more popular Linux distros include Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSe are good to wet your feet with when making switching.

now to get the free version of the distros you have to download them which can take a while but linux is fun and FREE.

red hat's download site

Does anyone here use Linux to make their AMVs?

As you can see, Linux users have a somewhat warped sense of humor.

If you're committed to a Microsoft platform, or are forced to share a computer with people who are, or if you like banging your head into brick walls for enjoyment, you might want to consider Virtual Dub. It is difficult but possible to make an AMV using only this program; I've done it and don't recommend it.

Virtual Dub has a very good filter library; look around a little for those to add to its already good stock selection. If you need something further in terms of effects, and have an app to capture from the screen, you might try MEIMI, a very good real-time video warper. It doesn't have an English patch like TMPEGEnc (sorry no link, but an excellent free MPEG encoder), but it's pretty good.

Regardless, you're going to need AviSynth. It's an extremely powerful pre-/post-processing utility, and it can also give you the only two effects Virtual Dub can't do that you'll really ever need, namely, layering and the crossfade.

If you've read the guides as you've said, then you probably have Audacity already. I haven't used this yet, but if AD likes it, it's probably as robust as you'll need.

luck,

I don't see what you mean. linux does offre many well made free apps that are very similar to programs you pay for that run on Windows or Mac OS. Take the program GIMP (GNU image manipulation program), it has most if not all of the tools Adobe Photoshop does. And for the one's who fear to leave their safe windows environment Linux offers the KDE interface that looks and interfaces a lot like windows and has thisprogram to edit video.

If you're still interested in finding free software and not breaking any licenseing laws Linux is the best way to go.

And for those wondering, if i could find out how to make WINE run all windows programs then i wouldn't be using Windows.

I was referring principally to trythil's post. Incase you don't come in much, he's about the highest-profile Linux-based creator on here.

I'm aware of the advantages of Linux, and were it not for some fortuitous hardware decisions I made early in my career, I'd probably be using it now.

Even so, I'd not be too sure of recommending the shift to a Linux system to someone just starting out. Given Microsoft's ridiculous market dominance, this often means learning a new OS at the same time you're trying to learn music video production; tuning either is a headache in itself. Also, most of the advice given on these boards applies principally to Windows-based systems; shifting platforms means that there's drastically fewer people to rely on for help.

I know it's a vicious circle, but one of the chief attributes of vicious circles is that it aint easy to get out of them.

Windows Movie Maker comes with Windows ME and XP for free, most brand new creators start off with this program because it's so easy, even a monkey could use it. And it gets you familiar with using a timeline, and at least allows you do cross-fades. (Which is a surprisingly effective transition) Quality is an issue, but as long as you have a high quality source, it shouldn't come out too bad.

If you need more detailed explanations on the process of creating AMVs, that's what the guides on the website are for.
