Who has experience?

When it's time to feel like an experienced editor AMVs?

I edited AMVs since 2003 but I feel like an experienced editor  , I think my reasoning is to create new things... although I have many years in the field... I watch a AMV and say that the effects of this AMV was made this way or the other... any way to know when you have the experience?

You could say you had experience the minute you finished your first amv.

I have no experience...

I think if you have the ability to pick apart every frame of an AMV, you are pretty experienced.

It's annoying to be experienced  :|

or maybe I'm just talking about competence [experience should bring competence]

don't be so modest. editors need to be confident [but still be realistic, of course]

If you feel comfortable in your program, I think you're experienced......good or not so good at editing, well that depends on who's watching your work ;)

I started in 1999, but didn't feel "experienced" until 2003 or so. In fact, I always feel the need to improve.

It's hard to believe that kids nowadays feel "experienced" after 6 months of stealing After Effects tutorials from videocopilot and creativecow.

I also feel that experience isn't just editing, but putting your work out there and interacting with other editors online and in person. Also accepting good/bad feedback, win/lose at cons, etc. are as important to developing your craft besides editing itself.

Hell I didn't feel "experienced" until I entered film school and began to mingle with other video students, working on projects, actually making the films not just splicing scenes together.

I haven't finished a video in close to 5 years and my last video was made in WMM, yet I still feel experienced, just because I've been around for a while and I'm able to analyze AMVs well and help people if they have questions about the program I use.

I think you have good experience when you realize that you stuff that you made sucks (at least at some aspects) and if you figure out what's good about a video without listening to other advices. ...and the last point: If you realize that there are many roads to victory, like... you don't need to sync every beat and can skip some for the benefit of other more important points of the video. Maybe you can call it thinking outside the box.

There is fore sure no all fiting answer for everybody. Everybody needs to figure out for himself. I started in fall 2001 and figured it out in fall 2007.

hahaha. They sure do.

A good sign of experience is when you start to loath giving people reviews because you're tired of telling everyone what's wrong with their work.

A good sign of experience is when you realize that 9 times out of 10, less is more.

A good sign of experience is not being able to explain verbally how to operate the program, because your hands have turned it into its own language.

Agreed, on both accounts. There are editors who've got 50+ videos under their belt and still haven't grasped the basics. On the other hand, there are some that easily fall in the upper 10% and only have a couple of videos made (effects mastery is merely style without substance, and while those editors might count among that 10%, it's a question of how they can improve over time, not the flashiness they can achieve in the short-term). It's largely about the openness of the community and being able to learn and improve.

I don't know when I started to feel "experienced", but it probably went along with my involvement in the General Video section, and when I started to see trends coming and going as the years have gone by. Especially since I don't average video releases all that often. Despite that, I certainly don't feel like an expert by any means.
