I'm just used to doing things my own way, and I'm afraid that if I start doing things like everyone else, I'll just become another faceless person in the crowd. I wish to maintain my individuality as a person, an editor and as a husband.
So forgive me for not wanting to adhere top common editing techniques. I just don't feel that all that fancy editing isn't really necessary to make a video enjoyable or otherwise. It's all the passion you have for doing something and the amount of effort you put into your videos.
And it's not just video's. It's anything you do. So forgive me for not wanting to be a follower. Not to mention that I've read all the guys that have been put on the org. And frankly, I didn't really understand it all. I mean, I did....but I didn't. Telling me it's recommended to do stuff like this, and stuff like that, and and it would be best if you.......
Get it out of my face. Editing Philosophy, Music Philosophy? I prefer to listen and feel the music. Not feel what a book tells me I'm suppose to feel. I'm stubborn. I get it. But I feel a lot of what I say makes sense as well. Although to you all, your probably sitting there say what the fuck is this guy's problem. I don't blame you. I just prefer to break way from the mold.
And please. Tastes and human perception are always changing, so eventually, those books are going to go out of date. Maybe not now, maybe not in my life-time, but eventually they will. What will you do then? It's proven that people don't like change. Which is why I believe everybody edits almost the same way or at least in ways the guides tell them too. I'm just not a big fan of conformity.
You're awfully condescending for someone who started the thread hoping for some discussion. All you have shown me so far is a complete disdain to listen to the advice of people trying to
help you. Feel free to ignore their advice, but then don't expect everyone to bow over at your "superior" editing techniques.
I won't bother repeating what godix has already stated, but I must say this; Following the rules and guides laid out by many thousands of people before your time does not make you a "follower", just as ignoring those rules doesn't make you a "leader".

Somewhere along the lines I think you forgot this is really just a hobby. People don't have to like it, as long as you enjoy what you do, why let any one else stop you? If what you fear is rejection or criticism, then this is certainly not the right place for you. If anything you'd be better off showing your video to friends and family, perhaps they'll learn to sugar coat it.
What you are essentially trying to tell us is that by ignoring everything that you should really be learning, you are somehow being anti-conformist and unique. The fact of the matter is, too many people are doing this. It's in no way being original, indeed most people don't bother learning the basics, and that's where they fail. Great artists spent years studying human anatomy and composition, just as musicians study sheet music and songwriting endlessly. Video editors are no exception to this. Learn about frame composition, mis en scene, shot types and colour theory. Make them second nature, and when you do you will realize how important they are, and how you ever lived without them.
Even if you find that you do not agree with the rules, it is better to knowingly break them than just be ignorant of their existence. Nobody is telling you to conform, but it would be highly beneficial to yourself if you at least studied the techniques and methods before decreeing them to be useless bits of information.
If you truly insist on believing that fighting against the rules makes you special, try using some Comic Sans for your typography next time. I hear the kids love that shit.
