Sick of this bad talk!

Postby Ashton » Wed Jan 15, 2003 2:01 am

I am sick to death of loging on every other day and finding yet another person telling me that "the AMV comunity is in recession" or "amvs today have lost their passion". I want to know how all of a sudden the entire comunity became completely emotionally devoid. This is a joke. The other day I was told by someone that nobody makes AMVs based on emotion anymore, that more and more effects driven videos were being created to compensate for this. In that case, where does the passion come from that inspires SpPanda to make an entire video in one night simply to express the anguish in his heart over an impending breakup with his girlfriend. Or where the shear exhileration and wonderlust that brought Omni Strata to make Souls. The two video are perfect examples really, because the first proves that there is passion in AMVs still, and that it is perfectly comunicable without effects. The second proves the same thing, but with an abundance of effects.
So I ask you all today, to support me, or prove me wrong. Yes or no question, is there still passion in the creation of AMV?

Actually, Fluxmeister made 'Souls.' (I'm assuming that you're referring to Souls of Rage and Sorrow)

Anyways, yes. I believe there's a lot of passion in the creation of AMV's these days. This passion is what drove people into making videos much more technical. It's not that people are obsessing about the effects, it's just that it's how they are choosing to express their passion.

I have to say yes. Yes there is. Atleast on my part, I try to portray some emotion I am feeling at the time in each one of my AMV's. Be it sorrow, joy, anger, depression, exc. As have I seen many other videos out there with a similar over tone. The is no doubt that some people just think less of their own work and throw some trash together for the hell of it. And I do not doubt that some people think so little of their own work to exchange feeling for effect. But it is, I feel, the real artist that put a piece of their own souls into each AMV they produce. I would find it difficult to believe otherwise. That's what separates the masters from the hacks/novice. (Not that I consider myself either, merely a hopeful.)

I believe the entire amv community is taking itself far too seriously. We are using other peoples art to make a music video. Its not our anime and its not our music. What I merely try to do is accuretly capture the emotions already present with in the anime, editing a string of clips that also acuretly cature the essence of the music played. We are not working from a blank canvas. This is just my view you are free to disagree, and I know I have terrible spelling and grammer there is no need to point it out.

I think there's plenty of passion.

There's just a lot of jerks, assholes, and negative-nancies that say otherwise.

When I make an AMV, I make sure I convey exactly what I wanna convey. I've always done it like that.

Want proof? Go watch my Sailor Moon S video, if you have it anyway. It was my first video, and it's exactly how I would want it, even today. I wouldn't dare change a thing. ANd then my more recent videos, they are still made with the same expectations in my mind of having something that people lvoe to watch. I never worry myself with technical BS, I just worry about "What's the idea or feeling I am trying to convey here?"

And THAT simple feeling and motivation is why the "AMV Greats" are great. Great editors like Kevin Caldwell, DokiDoki, Aluminum, Machine, Mexican Jr., SpPanda, Fluxmeister, ErMaC, Absolute Destiny, Koop... TONS of editors out there that edit videos so they're fun to watch and you can see their vision coming out on the screen.

For example.... a lot of people diss on Koop because of ReiMix. What the hell is wrong with it? Nothing! It has a lot of special effects. So? Do they distract from the video or its message and intentions? Not at all! In fact, they suppliment it!

Same thing with AD's "Arima Shinji-Kun", or Aluminum's "Closer", or ErMaC's "Soul of an Angel" (Which I didn't like as much as a lot of people, but I can still see that a lot of hard work was put into it and it came out how he wanted it!)

So is there passion in the AMV community?

I think the answer is a resounding "FUCK YEAH"

Passion, probably ... emotion, no. Not on my part atleast, if I feel fucked or great or whatever i don't sit behind my pc and cry while I hit the render button, bullshit. If I feel like putting emotion into anything I'll do that in my personal life and not some bullshit video editing project where no one really cares what you actually meant but only want to be enterained. Sure you can try to convey a deeper sense in a video but people who say "I put my emotions into this video" basically translate into "I don't have any friends to talk to about my feelings so instead of actually doing anything about it I'll sit on my ass and splice videos together alone in my room"... sorry if I offended anyone but that's just the way I feel.

To offend someone, what you said has to be true. In my case its not, so I take no offense. I think your attitude is shitty, but I take no offense. If I had no friends, I would probably have a lot more AMVs done... :P But I have a lot of IRL friends, and a fiancee, so I don't really have time for making AMVs much.. but when I do, I put in 110%.. ANd yes, I put emotion into it. Now i don't cry while hitting the render button, no I don't imagine that many people would watch my videos and be anything more than just entertained... but that's enough. And there are people out there who get into videos more than just for entertainment, and look for the artist's vision, and see it, and send feedback to them saying "This is great, I love it, I can tell what you were trying to do, blah blah blah." Yes there are those people out there, and I am one of them.

Again, your attitude is shitty. I hope that if you ever work in the entertainment industry, you never become a directory, because you'd probably end up making some bombs with that attitude.

 , I'm sure people put emotion into it but I just think it's pathetic that people use video editing as an excuse to express their feelings, that's all ... kind of like relationships in a chatroom.

I write romance fanfic, too

Although my ongoing fanfic has kind of switched from romance to drama/action in the last 2 chapters :) I have the whole story planned out basically, but I always improv the chapters, simply clinging to the story I have in my mind while writing whatever COMES to mind :P

So yes, there you have it, my two forms of expression. AMVs and Fanfic! I'M A GEEEEEEK!!! 8)

AMV's are still alive and full of energy. Just wait till I get myself a copy of Premeire and some supper cool anime.

Or....if you're soooo bored, why don't you put more life into the vids. Edit some videos already outa nd put some passion into them. Ask first though.

I think to there has to still be passion... to spend as many countless hours as we do working on something that we'll at most get an award for at a convention but is essentially a pretty thankless hobby. I'd imagine if people weren't passionate about AMV editing/creation they would make (at best) one vid, realize the world wasn't beating a path to their doorstep to worship them, and move on to something else....

As for people using editing to express feelings... how is that essentially any different than expressing your feelings through music, or song, or poetry?
