What exactly is a M@D?

Post by -Reda- » Sat Mar 31, 2007 3:58 pm

I've seen several videos in the past known as M@Ds or MADS, and theyre distinctly different from your average AMV. I was just wondering, what defines a M@D?

Basically, it's an AMV made in Japan. This is much like saying a manga is a comic book made in Japan; yes, it's a true definition, but it doesn't really go into the little stylistic differences and such that really separate manga from American comics. M@Ds are really hard to pin down and I'm not anything like an expert, but from what I 've seen, M@Ds are usually one of three types:

1) Opening/closing parodies. These take one anime and pair it with the opening/closing of a different anime, or are new openings/closings for an anime outright. (Rememeber kids: parody and comedy are not synonyms.)

2) Image manipulation M@Ds. These are made with dating sim, H-game, and artboard images usually with extensive effects to make the images seem to come to life or to just add more motion to what would essentially be a slideshow otherwise.

3) I-forget-the-exact-term (Sesiga?) M@Ds. These are the most like standard AMVs, though usually with a ton more effects.

It's funny ... I've seen my two latest videos listed on Japanese sites, and they are listed as MADs ... So, I would just say that they are the Japanese term pure and simple.

Most MADS I've seen also have a certain quality to them that's kinda hard to define but I think is best summed up with the phrase 'How the fuck did After Effects not kill itself while rendering this?'

Recently I've seen MADS becoming yet another genre rather than 'japanese makers'. In the same way that many current american cartoons have such strong anime characteristics that some actually consider them anime. For example, I think Princess Bride is clearly a MAD even though JCD isn't Japanese. I suspect the MAD purist will jump down my throat for this the same way anime fans jump all over someone who says Avatar or Teen Titans is anime.

If you buy an X-Men comic book in Japan, it's called a manga too. Whether or not Kia Asamiya did the art for that issue or not. :)
