Unfortunately, a lot of the videos I'd add to this list aren't available for download on this site...most don't even have profiles :cry:
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Just to note, I am following this topic and noting the suggestions. I just don't see a reason to to post 'good suggestion' after each post. So keep suggesting.

Oh right, recommendations (not necessarily the best of the best, but these are the ones that have stood the test of time for me):

[vidid=6875]
[vidid=3854]
[vidid=12663]
[vidid=324]
[vidid=11408]
[vidid=1462] (and maybe someday he'll finish remastering/remaking it)
[vidid=8514]
[vidid=6613]
[vidid=383]

Is there any other qualification to being a classic other than
"I think it's good"? It's getting hard to tell, a lot of good
AMVs are being mentioned but there doesn't seem to be a
single defining characteristic which would establish what a
"classic" must be. How is this any different now than
perusing the "Recommended AMVs" forum, or even the top
10?

Maybe a classic AMV should be at least 10 years old. My
assumption is that, if it's still remembered after all this
time, it must have been special somehow. A vid made
in 200?, no matter how good, is not a classic, although
it may become one someday.

No one needs to know Euphoria is good. What people need
to know is that Thalawyn's (IIRC) AMV of "Wings of
Honneamise" set to "Major Tom" was good. It would be
even better if someone has it because I haven't seen that
vid since 1994.

This is probably his best-known MAD:

My favorite of his work:

CCS does Bleach OP:

An awesome MAD that's not made by Pianos:

these aren't necessarily "old" videos, but rather amvs that would help amv newbies understand the aesthetic standards and directions the community here has taken. in other words, videos that 99% of the org copies off (or at least are influenced by).

So newbies should see the videos which 99% of the org copies off
so that they too can copy off them? I don't think they need help
for that ;)

I'm not sure if people who start out making AMVs really need any
guidance, aside from the technical stuff. This list is shaping up to
be good, no doubt, but it's just that, a list of good AMVs. If anything
I hope newbies view them and do not imitate them, but try new
things instead.

...On the other hand, seeing these videos exposes newbs to what's already out there, so they don't go and make something that's already been done. Which will probably happen anyway; there are precious few editors out there who will make something completely original their first time around, and those who do are those who have downloaded and watched enough AMVs to know the difference.
