So there's a lot of new people in the hobby over the last several years who've never seen the classic vids that are around. Currently we have a top 10% list and a recommended viewing forum but both tend to highlight the new over the old. For example Engel is buried as 70 something on the top 10 list. Now you can use filters on the top 10% to get only videos made years ago but lets be honest, how many people are actually going to do that? So I propose a list of the classic vids, the ones that every AMVer should see at least once. Something like Phades Recommended Viewing but with more vids and updated. Ideas like this have been suggested before but this one is a little different. I'm not asking the admins to add it to an already lengthy 'things to do' list. I'm actually going to do it. I'll take suggestions, consider them, compile ones that I think should be on the list, write a brief description of why it should be considered a classic, and submit the list to the admins. Hopefully it could be put under the guides section (not all of it is actually guides) or a new topic in recommended AMVs forum or some other easily accessible place if the mods agree. I'll also do my best to find links for the ones that aren't on the org, maybe it'll help someone who really wants Evangelion Opus but can never find it. Keep in mind, this isn't an attempt to duplicate the other systems but rather highlight some videos that are probably slipping under the radar of new users. So while I'll toss in some from the top 10% list or the recommended viewing section because they deserve to be listed as classics I'm not going to just copy down everything in them.

Here's a partial list of vids I'm thinking of including. Feel free to suggest more since I by no means covered them all:

Aokakesu - Odorikuruu - One of the first and still one of the best dance videos

ErMaC Studios - Soul of an Angel - interesting use of overlays that isn't often seen
Closer to God - A very good example of emulating the songs official video.

Kevin Caldwell - Believe, Engel, and Caffine Encomium - none of these should need explanation

Lawrence Chu - Liberi Fatali in Motion - One of the most unusual, and funny, uses of text in an AMV ever

The various DDR projects. At least one of them. These projects are probably the single biggest influence in current dance videos

Metro - True Fiction - He wanted to bring effects to a new level. He did.

Koop - Euphoria - There's a reason it's been #1 on the site for years

AMV Hell - one of them at least. Their influence on current comedy videos can't be denied, although it is regretted by some.

Something from Piano's MADS. Not sure which one though. The MAD style should have at least one vid on the list though and Piano is the best MAD maker I know of.

Sierra Lorna - Elvis vs Anime - Another very close emulation to the songs official video. Enjoyable despite it's technical flaws.

VicBond007 - When Worlds Collide - My personal favorite of his. Charcoal Sketched Dreams would probably be more what people consider his classic video though so perhaps that instead.

Daicon 4 opening & On Your Mark - Probably couldn't actually link to these but both are music videos with original animation from actual japanese anime creators and deserve mention

Absolute Destiny - I Wish I Was A Lesbian - for obvious reasons
- Storytelling - Simple editing, very well done, doesn't appear to be known nearly as much as it should

Big Big Truck - Failed Experiments In Video Editing - if this isn't a classic I don't know what is.

dokidoki - Right Now - Another close emulation of the songs original video. Nice effect work for the time period it was made. Sets a good example of how to use effects without flashing to every beat as well.

E-Ko - Tainted Donuts - One of the earlier examples of rotoing two different animes together

Studio Hybrid - Jinnai Bugrom - For some reason everyone seems to have forgotten this but I don't think they should.

Aluminum Studios - Dreams of Red - A sailor moon video that doesn't make me puke. Who woulda thought it possible.

Atvaark - Anthem - I think it's best of the various vids of the 'experimental' style vids

Kusoyaro - Sappy Self Indulgence - A multi-anime video that didn't go the route of 'lets throw as many animes as we can find in here' and remains fairly unique because of it.

Otohiko - The Wasteland - Very effective at creating a mood and sustaining it far longer than you would think it could be.

Shonen Productions - Evangelion Opus - Still has enough appeal that every few months theres a 'where can I download this' thread started.

Vlad Pohnert - Memories Of Dance - Awhile ago there were a fair number of Ghibli tributes made. This was the best of them.

Phade - Material Girl - Because I'm not above sucking up.

I definitely would like to see this, too. I'm just wondering about True Fiction, since that was made less than two years ago...

Also, might I recommend you include AbsoluteDestiny's Shameless Rock Video, for self-explanatory reasons, as well as MaboroshiStudios' Lain | Sleep Now.

Maybe because it's awesome?

Because I think True Fiction is bound to become a 'classic' vid.

I can't believe I forgot Shameless Rock Video. Probably because personally I didn't like it much but it is one of ADs signature videos. I don't recall Lain | Sleep Now. I'll look it up to see if I missed it or didn't like it or just forgot it or what.

I tried to include a little of everything. There's no real action or romance in my list though. I tend to avoid either of those genres so I'm not the person to judge what's classic in those.

Odd, I overlooked this post at first for some reason. Senility must be kicking in. Anyway, some good suggestions here and some I'll have to look up. Apparently new users aren't the only ones missing out.

i'd suggest putting a hungrycrackpot vid on the list. that guy knew howto make a joke video. and the difference in viewer reaction is amazing
some people (me) think it's the funniest stuff on the org.
others just became pissed off about them not being "real" videos, and DEMANDED they be removed.
this ones the pick of the litter for me: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=20573

besides that, "eva: redeath" and "this is otakudom". both are very lengthy stories and completely dubbed.

http://www.umbrellavideo.com/vault/non. ... akudom.zip

i think redeath is funnier, but otakudom is probably a more essential video to watch for someone getting into the hobby

You know what I wanna see?? is a recreation of the 'I can't dance' by Genesis video. I'm sure it can TOTALLY be done too.

GREAT list, god9, I second every recomendation there.... but wait... I already did, in the recommended section.

I'd like to second this, especially on Otakudom, as far as I'm concerned, there as much required viewing for the culture as Kevin Caldwell.

Concerning M@D's, I personally never was all that impressed with what Piano has done, it may be worthy to mention the vault's small M@D collection, especially since they have action/epic focus to contrast Piano's more... life genre/style.

A few years ago I digitalized some classic videos, and most
ended up in the vault. I recently made a listing of them:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... ht=#914273

Here's an article on the story behind C-ko's AMVs:
http://www.houstonpress.com/2001-08-02/ ... st-praise/

Here's an old usenet post on "You Know Who":
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts ... put=gplain

I mostly admire "You Know Who". I wish con organizers would allow
anonymous submissions. It's not about the creator, it's about the
AMV.

I would like to suggest something by Fluxmeister. My favorite would be Endure, but I imagine most folks would recommend one his action videos.
