plot in AMVs

Postby NPC3000 » Mon Dec 02, 2002 1:26 am

A question just out of curiousity. When people say they want to see "plot" in AMVs, does it mean they want the video to actually show the progression of a storyline from beginning to end(methinks this would significantly cut down the possibilities for AMVs if they had to be so limited)? Or are people simply asking that the video be about something and not just be a bunch of random, synched clips?

I think I've done "plot" in terms of following the original anime's storyline in a few cases, but in a way it's a perfectly logical way of doing so if you've got the right music for it.

Give Send Maya My Love or In So Many Ways a shot...both follow the AMV-as-synopsis line of thinking, so there are spoilers, but less so with SMML.

Otherwise, I will tend to lock upon a certain character, as with Zenigata's Tribute, and the rest of time I take scenes that match up the lyrics or pace of the song.

I think you'll get different answers from different people, but mostly it's the latter - "asking that the video be about something." There's not usually enough time to get a full-blown story going, although a good set of lyrics helps.

There's a strong bias towards story and character just due to the nature of the source material (and the fanbase for AMVs). If we were all using film footage of nature scenery, you'd hear a lot less talk about "plot".

I think it's nice when certain types of videos (read: drama) either try to follow the plot of the anime used, (at least for the parts used in the amv) or use scenes from the anime to follow the lyrics of the song used.

Either one works in terms of telling a good story, in my book, but this is certainly less important in a dance or "action" type vid.

That's just my $.02, but trying to be dramatic and evoke strong emotions while stringing random scenes that "look cool" just falls a bit flat for me, most of the time.

I really try to have some kind of storyline in my videos and let the lyrics of the song direct the plot for me. I find editing is much easier that way.

Tainted Dnuts. That's all the plot you need right there.

I think p-lot means that the video has it's own storyline, whether or not it is the original story of the source. However, I persobnally do not think it is necessary for a video to have a plot. However, it shopuld make sense. Randomly chosen scenes don't always (I admit the possibility) go together cohesively. You do need to choose the scenes so they will flow togetjher. It doesn't have to have a story, but it does need to make sense. You can tell the difference between a truly random video, and a video where it may seem random, but there actually is a purpose behind the scene selection.

Yes, that video was sad, because of all the horrible lyric matching. I swear to christ he drew the starfish scene himself.

Anyway, yes, Plot = Story within an AMV. Like a backdrop to the music, i guess. Sort of like a theme for a video. Something like This Isn't What We Meant, or Liquid Petals.

Nice, MTT's videos usually are nicely plotted.

I made a compleate original plot in my Transcending Love video since it took place in an alternate reality.. I even had to write a script compleate with a storyboard just to make it work 8)
