Downloads Downloads Everywhere and Not an Opinion to be Read

Postby BishounenStalker » Sun Nov 24, 2002 4:25 am

It seems people have gotten horribly lazy when it comes to giving opinions on AMVs. If you're going to bother spending the time to download, then at least be courteous enough to give feedback, for good or ill. Even to tell the creator it sucked. One major reason we spend the frustration, sleepless nights, and ripped-out hair making these videos is for them to be seen by other people, and for said people to tell us what they think.

Perhaps that's why so many new crappy videos are being made. Nobody gives a damn enough to tell the creator that that particular video sucked, why it sucked, and how they can do better next time.

Besides complaining about horrible AMVs and raving about the good ones here on the forum, drop the creator a note about it, too. Leave an opinion!

Go to the opinion exchange forum and offer some opinion trades ^_^
Humans are more altruistic when there is something in it for them.

There are also a lot of people who don't want to write a vague, short, or unuseful review and opt to not do one at all. I prefer the email approach when I like a video but just don't have much to say about it. If you specifically ask someone here to help you by giving you some constructive criticsm, they will almost all agree to help you.

About 1 every 100-200 is expected. That's pretty bad I know, but those odds are for good vids @_@ Bad vids rarely even get opinions since ppl don't think its worth the effort, or they feel they already wasted enough time to d/l and watch it. There's also those who fear a revenge review, because they scored some vid .'/ with low scores. So like Misty said if you want to change those odds you goto opinion exchange.

This is one of the unfortunate truths of the .org. People need to grow up. If you get a bad score, just take it. Don't go back and edit the other persons review and give them all 5's when they had 7's and 8's originally.

Bah, reviews are overrated... and this, coming from the #1 most opinionated on the site. :-P

Plenty of people won't know enough to be able to leave a constructive review. The people who do know enough all tend to have long backlogs of videos for which they've already promised reviews.

And most people seem to want reviews for affirmation, rather than for criticism.

Good point, but here's the problem:

I want reviews because I am a newb, and I hope that someone might have some suggestions for what to fix/work on/avoid. Thus I feel weird turning around and critiquing someone else's work - because what do I know? I'm a newb. It's kind of a bind.

However I definitely agree that the touchy, "How dare you say bad things about my masterpiece" creators need to get their heads out of their asses. I've dealt with fragile egos in other arenas and it's really freaking annoying (writers can be really bad about this, in particular). Assuming the reviewer isn't just being a jerk ("U sux0r lololololollo!!!!1"), they're there to help you. Chill.

But I think I'm preaching to the converted here; just had to vent. ;)

All animals are in it for themselves. Even parenthood in all it's dedication can basically be boiled down to protecting your own genetic material.
'Happy Mother's day mom...but I know you were only in it to see your genes passed on' True altruism hardly exists among any species. aaaaanyway....

True, most people really just want to know they did a good job. Obviously they were satisfied with their production enough to call it finished so I find it hard to give suggestions related to their creative choices.

Once I tried to say that I thought the special effects and massive use of overlays and wipes seemed to bring the viewer away from the amv and was messy. Boy did I get a talking to by the creator!

Now, I tend to mention technical errors. Is that what you mean by how someone can help you if your video 'sucked', BishounenStalker? I have seen videos with technical problems that were enjoyable even with their flaws. I really think experience is the only way to truly improve your video editing and creativity, but that is just me.
