AMV Distribution Center Survey

Postby Red Wolf » Fri Nov 15, 2002 11:01 pm

For those who don't know, the AMV Distribution Center is where AMV creators can submit CDs of their work to be distributed to anyone who wants a copy (see the link in my signature for more details).

We've been up for a little while now and have a decent collection of CDs available for distribution. However CD requests remain low, much lower than makes the effort behind the AMV DC worth while. Now I'm not planning a shutdown anytime soon but I would like to see the request traffic pick up.

I want to ask the people out there who haven't requested any CDs from us why they haven't. I'm looking for straightforward, honest answers since those are the only ones that will help me to improve the DC.

Had you not heard about the DC until now? Do you already have all the videos you want downloaded? Is it a bother to put together the CDs and postage yourself? Do you lack the funds? Do you think the whole thing is a scam? These are just some possible questions, any answer who have will be good.

Thanks for your help in this matter.

Honestly my only reason is laziness. I just haven't bothered to check it out yet, and there's no reason I shouldn't. I'm on a 56k, so I don't download videos that much, and the Distro sounds like it would be easier.

Yep, laziness is definitely the key factor here. In fact, I'm gonna get off my lazy ass now and check the Distro site out.

Haha, no money for postage and stuff. I'm going to submit a CD to the distro center anytime anyways.

I actually meant to ship off some CD requests, for Otakudom, AbDes Year 1, and Random Variable among others, but I got busy and it keeps slipping my mind. I'll have to get on that.

It's a great idea, especially for people on a 56k that can't download videos easily, or for people who are having my particular hosting problem (my University caps uploads beyond 30 KB, so I can't even FTP large jpegs into my site, much less AMVs.). It's also a good way for people to get "free hosting", as it were, so I have no idea why more people haven't sent in CDs for distro (in my case, I have a few video ideas I want to work on, and I want to make good use of the CD space, so I want to have more videos. I currently have about 200 MB of videos I've made, and half of that isn't worth sharing. Waste of disc space. I'll contact you when I am ready to ship off a a master CD.)

But, yeah, if requests are flagging, I've got some I've been wanting and it keeps slipping my mind to go out and buy the slim cases and envelopes for them. I should go do that...

Aside from the fact that right now I'm in Japan, I would have to say that it's just easier to and more cost effective to go through the process of downloading what I want for myself and burning it off. For some of the rarer things (ie "Otakudom" which I REALLY want, and the DDR projects) I think it's to much of a hassle. When I get back to the states I will make those requests, but that's in two months so don't wait up for me.

One major reason why I haven't requested CDs is that I'm either personal friends with the people on the list, or I've briefly met them at one con or the other. Either way, I've already gotten a CD from them.

There's no reason for me to request CDs I already have :D

Granted, there ARE a good portion of CDs from people I have never met, and would LIKE to view the videos of, but it's not a huge priority to me at the moment.

I still think it's a fantastic idea, and will eventually gain the support and requests necessary to keep it running. Keep at it, please!

You know I think some people don't want to because they would rather download them in the first place which is just odd considering CDs are so much better. But also I don't think promotion has been high enough over the board, did we ever get that link for the distribution center on the members page?

I think it's just giong to take a little time and momentum.

I think compiling some cd's of some hard to find stuff would be good idea, personally. A kevin caldwell CD or some MADs, things like that.

Obviously idf kevin objects they can be taken down, but if he doesn't then it would be a good way for people to get his stuff.

then you just need more word of mouth.

It's new

Postby anneke » Sat Nov 16, 2002 1:39 pm

Yep, it's New and so takes awhile for the news of it to spread. Make a banner for the site. I have a link on my page but a banner would be nice.

Also this is sort of the 'off' season for Anime conventions and thus AMVs. During the main Anime Convention time, you'll get more hits.

re: compilations
Contest compilations might be popular and generate more requests. Difficult to put together, and practically impossible with events like the AWA Expo. But for most exhibitions this should be do-able if the contest organizers (or their proxies) were interested. It may not be necessary to get permission from the creators since the usual rule is that all submissions belong to the con to do with as they please. Personally, I'd rather be asked even though I'd probably agree anyway.

Other collections are possible, too. Like a 233-volume set of DBZ videos. :twisted:

********

Another CD that might get a lot of requests would be something like an "AMV creator's utility disc". This could include files like

* ErMaC & AD's master guide
* all the other guides
* the AMVapp package
* Quu's MCIPlay
* miscellaneous (free) codecs
* sample Premiere project files
* system benchmark utilties

And whatever else people can come up with.

Thanks for the responses. I figure laziness would be a factor and I'm glad to see money isn't too big of one (and yes, food comes before AMVs). I'm not panicking or anything (hell, I should be glad I don't have piles of CDs to do every night) but I would like to see this thing succeed so I'm still feeling things out.

So things to do:

1. Create a logo and banner
2. Annoy Phade about a link
3. Consider annoying various AMV contests and conventions

I have found a good way to do international requests so that should help bolster some numbers. I'll post details on the web site soon. It will be interesting to see where all of this leads to. Thanks again folks.

I'm actually waiting for the number of CD's you have to reach 30, when that happens then I'll send out my blanks

I'd be interested if I could get hold of the DDR non-stop vids.
