How much is to much?!

Postby anneke » Fri Nov 15, 2002 1:04 pm

My next AMV project is using a series that isn't in the US, other in as fansubs. I have the fansubs and I'm going to try and just use them for an AMV, but I have also been looking into getting good quality footage. However the cost for getting the 40 episode series on DVD from Japan is going to $500.00! Is it worth it for a 5 minute video? I say yes, but I really can't justify spending so much still for a series that I'll use once. <sigh> What do other people think? Anyone else have the same problem? If it was like $200 I wouldn't mind so much, but really...$500.00!

What series is it? You could try to re-sell it after you're done with it.

Is it something that will appear in the states in the next few years? I'd wait before investing that much money.

I'd say do it if you really want to... But, this is just a hobby for a lot of us and we even spend a ton to get that footage we really neeed! I know I have! :D It's your choice, no one person can tell you what to do other than yourself.

Hey Anneke. If you're talking about Versailles no Bara (Rose of Versailles) the DVD box-set's do cost a bit. I'm importing in a couple DVD's from Japan too. Maybe you should only use footage from one of the box sets. It all depends. Also, region 2 DVD ripping is a bitch without the right software (I think it's DVDGenie). But, they are high quality.

The other choice is getting high quailty fansubs. The TechnoGirls fansub distro is very nice and they have good quality copies of the tapes ^^

O_O

$500...

I probably wouldn't spend that much unless I thought I would get good use out of it. Do you think you would use it for more than one video, and/or watch the series more than just for finding clips?

Regardless, I'd make sure before buying something that pricy hastily.

Best of luck.

I'd say it's only too much if you have to sacrifice something in exchange for buying it. Some people spend hundreds of dollars on their hobbies of collecting misc. items. Think of sports fans who travel around following their team across the country. It's fine to me if you spend every last penny of your money on something you love to do...in fact I would encourage it.

What good is money if we never spend it on something? It's better than saving all of your money for a rainy day..unless that rainy day is to be taken as a vacation to a tropical island

In other words, unless it puts you back so much you get evicted or you have to choose between a month's worth of groceries or buying the dvds, go for it. Trying to justify something only works if you are trying to talk yourself *into* something ^_^

O_O GOOD LORD!!! No I wouldnever spend that much for one video unless you desperatley want that series and will watch it a lot and that it will NEVER be released over here I say don't get it. Five-hundred-dollars is just too much in my opinion for one video.

I would recommend trying to get the footage cheaper than $500 ^_^ I'm sure there's someone out there that has it and could sell it to you used or something maybe... You say the series is fansubbed, the fansubbers must have gotten ahold of the series somewhere, and I doubt that they paid 500 bucks for it all. Heck, maybe you could see if the fansubbers would let you have their copies cheap.

Although they may be hard to find, you could always get the RAWs (the footage of the series the fansubbers use) of the series you are looking for in all of it's un-subbed glory. But like I said, it will probably be a lot harder then finding the fansubbed versions, but on the plus side it would be free. <- After looking for hours for raw files....

Try these techniques. I've gotten success with them before:

1)Beg the fansubbers for SVHS or so copies of raws
2)Post on the MLs for local anime clubs. Someone usually goes and has a ton of import discs.
3)Check animejungle.com for used copies.
4)repeat using rinkya.com (a courier service for the yahoo japan auctions - the ones that don't ship overseas)

Usually you can save quite a bit with these methods, especially number four if the fates are with you - I got an unopened Deluxe LD box set of Memories for $35 before fees and shipping that way (the box was tagged ¥14,800 or about $120 and VERY out of print)...

Good luck!
