Why do you all have to use different formats?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

I can understand the "cause I have to use Windows Media Player" argument,

but not everyone who has a .WMV file uses WMM, as I posted earlier I use Sony Vegas and its the cleanest Render direct from the program without so much recompressing, and also it makes my file size quite a bit smaller. (which I hate to be so nitpicky but I like smaller file sizes)

Also I downloaded Quicktime just so I can play .MOV Files and Divx so I can play those special files..

of course due to the mass flood of WMM users I have to put warnings and whatnot on the video profiles, cause I do use DVD Footage and a program that is NOT Windows Movie Maker, so I can do more effects (like a simple overlay) than WMM, And I dont have subs all over my videos either (another common mistake of the avarage WMM user)

MOV - because it is Apple proprietary (mostly) and suffers from similar problems to WMVs.

Other than that I don't care if people use AVI, MKV, OGM, or whatever else as long as they use a good (and free) codec.

Thank you for demonstrating a lack of knowledge of the difference between a video container, codec, and standards body.

"MPEG" in its most general usage refers to a standards group. (Hence, the "G".) They define the specifications and interfaces for everything from MPEG-1 to XviD to x264, as well as a wide variety of video containers, decoding techniques, standards for media indexing, and a whole lot more.

Matroska, OGM, and AVI are not codecs. They are only media containers.

he never implied that avi, mkv, or ogm are codecs.

That's not the problem I have with wmvs, it's rather the processing power they take. A wmv in 640x480 @ 29.97 fps wouldn't play back on my old system without jerking.

Funny thing is if I take the videostream and put it in an avi container, it works just fine :P You can encode the video for avis with wmv9 using the official codec nowadays. And it's actually a very good codec.
Just the file format wmv is crap if you don't use it for streaming :P

My system is newer and I still cant get some AVIs to play properly,

I can get the audio to play in Quick Time and the Video to play in WMP but even with downloading and reinstalling the codecs I still cant get some to play correctly :P

there are also some AVIs that due to file size will occasionally freeze up and lock up on me, but for the most part I grin and bear it, and attempt to watch them anyways..

so to me, if you want to VIEW AMVs you should be able to bend to file type... if that AMV is improtant enough you will get that program to watch it...

if you cant watch it then, oh well its not the end of the world... its not the creators fault... (unless they upload their project file and not the actual AMV, then it might be best to tell them how to render o.0 - I've come across this a couple times.) - This is my take on Viewing AMVs...

I still like the filesize ratio for .WMV

RolltheStampede wrote:Point is if we all used avi like you are suggesting and want it to play on a virgin machine with no compression the file size would be like 40gb for 5 minutes or so. mpeg or mpeg to would most likely be universally accepted because most pcs at least can play them without any other decompressors. Im not sure how that works with macs i believe the standard for macs are mov. And i believe when people using windows movie maker export there video it exports to wmv. which is not a bad codec, but frowned upon in the community for having bad quality even though that is a result of the original footage not the codec.

I frown on wmv for 1 being hard to work with (as you said, wich means TYPICALLY bad footage, in wmv's case especially the audio), but mostly for being darned near uneditable... I mean even if I want to recompress the thing to a lower bitrate for archiving I have to be a freaking rocket scientist!! I've seen awesome .wmv's, .mov's, .rm's I wouldn't think lowly of them... in .mov's case they are just plain 'slow'. Editing in 24fps is another question entireley.
