AMVs and College

Postby WhyDoSensesFail » Thu Nov 10, 2005 9:07 pm

Hello... I've hit a bit of a quandry... I'm looking into colleges, and I am curious as to what major comes close to doing AMVs for a living, or AMV-like things. ^_^

Visual Arts programs with video, animation, film.

Maybe some sort of Communications program with Videography.

Video/film obviously, Brad demoss had a major in cinamatography. Just basicly film in general though the closest thing you be able to make (if your lucky) are film trailers and montages.

Something video related, filmography. Or even related to Japanese culture and be sure to join the anime club or start one if it doesn't exist at your college (what! is that possible? )

Graphic Design, Computer Art & Design, Multimedia Computing. There should be a digital video editing course somewhere in one of those fields of study.

Despite all of this, there's a fair number of people here who have or are working towards degrees in the sciences (particularly computer science) or engineering.

You figure it out.

Gooood, education is important. But I highly suggest going for a day job. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, but so many people think that they can make it into doing something they love that there A. isn't that great of a calling for, and B. is probably a highly competitive field, and end up wasting vast amounts of time and money pursuing it. -_- Get a practical degree then work on your less practical degree on the side.

Whatever you do, you don't want to go into news editing. Especially if you're a perfectionist like me. Although it does involve editing video and will give you experience in editing programs, it's completely different from editing AMVs. A lot quicker turnaround, no need for effects (usually), no choice in what you edit. Plus, as an intern, they only pay you in coffee and sunshine. :(

x2
Make sure that you can use the degree you get in some kind of real job that you'll like. Then worry about AMVs.
Yeah, the AMV thesis....that was me.

I'm in a Visual Effects program at The Art Institute of Vancouver, and I found it to be really related to a lot of things done in AMVs, especially if you're into doing Photoshop and After Effects work in your videos. It's a mix of film and computer animation (I even get to have an actual Digital Editing class next semester, woot!) and I'm finding that my experience in making AMVs has really helped me get a head start on a lot of my classes, and some things I learned (such as some compositing tips) have even helped me with the AMVs I'm working on.

You'll want a Video Arts/Film major but look into film production major otherwise it's film studies which is quite different. If you do film production you'll sooner or later even come across a class on editing in theory.
