Why do I like AMVs, or like making them? Related, but somewhat different questions.
I like AMVs in general because I think they are a unique way of experiencing anime. If done right, they can capture the spirit of a show in a more powerful way than the original show did, or put a new twist on it. Alternatively, they can do the same thing to a song in a new and different way. I also find them more interesting than most live action music videos because the source footage and music tend to be tied together closer (beat/lyric sync, etc.).
I like making AMVs because I'm fascinated by both the process (video editing, learning more about computers), and the end result (seeing an idea of mine expressed). It also gives me an excuse to buy anime DVDs, as I've been more of a manga guy for the past few years before getting into AMVs.
The only thing I don't like about the hobby is the money I'm gonna have to shell out for it (Naruto R2 DVDs, for instance...) but then, it's an expensive hobby.
