Why is "art" a dirty word?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

Ok, time to put this straight:
http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=ART&hl=en
All that is art.
One thing it has in common: They all mean somethink to the artist. It doesn't matter weather a 4 yo did it or a 50 year master artist. art without a meaning to the artist is a doodle, and they mean you are bored which is no excuse for art<or AMV's for that matter.>
OK? Any more of this thread and it will be discussed to death...

G. Gurdjieff wrote:The keys to all the ancient arts are lost, were lost many centuries ago. And therefore there is no longer a sacred art embodying laws of the Great Knowledge, and so serving to influence the instincts of the multitude.

There are no creators today. The contemporary priests of art do not create but imitate. They run after beauty and the likeness or what is called originality, without posessing even the neccesary knowledge. Not knowing, and not being able to do anything, since they are groping in the dark, they are praised by the crownd, which places them on a pedestal. Sacred art vanished and left behind only the halo which surrounded its servants. All the current words about the divine spark, talent, genius, creation, sacred art, have no solid basis - they are anachronisms. What are these talents? We will talk about them on some suitable occasion.

Either the shoemaker's craft must be called art, or all contemporary art must be called craft. In what way is a shoemaker sewing fashionable custom shoes of beautiful design inferior to an artist who pursues the aim of imitation or originality? With knowledge, the sewing of shoes may be sacred art too, but without it, a priest of contemporary art is worse than a cobbler

Before you ask if I actually take the above quote seriously, I certainly do.

That reminds me of what Flaubert wrote about art in his "Dictionary of Received Ideas":

Gustave Flaubert wrote:ENAMEL The secret of the art is lost.

MOSAICS The secret of the art is lost.

PAINTING ON GLASS The secret of the art is lost.

FRESCOES Nobody paints them any more.

CATHOLICISM Has had a very good influence on art.

ARTISTS All charlatans. Praise their disinterestedness (old-fashioned). Express surprise that they dress like everyone else (old-fashioned). They earn huge sums, but squander them. Often asked to dine out. A woman artist must be a whore. What artists do can't be called work.

ART Leads to the workhouse. What use is it since machines can make things better and quicker?

DISGUSTING Must be said of any work of art or literature which the Figaro will not let you admire.

GOBELINS A Gobelins tapestry is an amazing piece of work which takes fifty years to make. On seeing it, exclaim: "It’s more beautiful than a painting!” The workman doesn’t know what he’s doing.

DRAWING (ART OF) “Consists of three things: line, stippling and fine stippling. There is also the masterstroke; but the masterstroke can only be given by the master” (Christophe).

SCENERY (STAGE) Isn’t real painting. All you have to do is to splash paint on the canvas and spread it with a broom; distance and lighting do the rest.

DAGUERROTYPE Will take the place of painting. (See PHOTOGRAPHY.)

PHOTOGRAPHY Will take the place of painting. (See DAGUERROTYPE.)

That's from the other side. Sort of.

I typed the word "art" into Google image search, and I did indeed get mostly pictures of half-naked women. I also got a picture of Luigi, Mario's brother.

Firstly:

Or in other words "I am losing my arguement, I shall now attempt a grasp at a moral high ground." :¬ /

Secondly, These Definitions.

Thirdly, my own personal opinion. I believe that there is more to art that paintings, or even a conection between the "artist" and the "art". I think that music, sculptures, poetry, (Anime)music videos, films and many more come under the very general heading of "Art". This is because i feel that art is whatever creative outlet it takes from person to person. for me it (was AMVs and) is now songwriting, for many people here it would be AMVs.

I think it is very selfish to think that one person can tell another what art is and say there is no alternative.

I believe that art is what the artis portays it to be. It can be a pile of cow manure and still be art if the cow poops it in a way it thinks is artistical.

Also, sorry to double post, but why is the fact that half-naked women come up in an image search of art such a shock (or at least bemusement :¬ P)? there is a thick line (with nice grey areas) between porn and art and I think a lot of what you're seeing is probably art.

loosely paraphrased from Terry Pratchett:
If the naked lady has urns and things beside her it's art. If she's wrapped around a pole moving her hips all about it's indecent.

If you need someone to tell you what art is, go shoot yourself.

Beowulf wrote:What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear someone say the word "art", in any context? Is it some French asshole with a skinny ciggarette drinking a cup of coffee? Is it the Mona Lisa/David/Starry Night? Is it Euphoria? Is it Andy Warhol?

Why is it when people talk of the artistic merits of AMVs, they get labled as pretentious or arrogent? (To be fair, a lot of said people are pretentious and arrogent.)

Is likening AMVs to "high art" really so ridiculous? I don't think so at all. To me, art is all about what your trying to say with it. If you say something with a cut tool, a paint brush, a chisel, or your own vaginal blood, it doesn't really matter to me. If what your saying finds an audience, then what is the difference? I submit that there is none.

I bring this up because this is the only artistic community that I know of that has an EXTREMELY vocal self-depricating element. Since AMVs began there have always been people saying that AMVs are not art, are complete bullshit, take no skill, mean nothing, ect ect. I find it so fascinating that an element of a community would constantly put itself down and belittle its artistic acomplishments. Why would you do this?

Why can't the finest AMVs be held in the same breath as the finest paintings, sculptures, composers, ect? Is it the collective guilt of using pirated software (which we all do)? The feeling that since we are chopping up other peoples visions, our own must be insignificant?

Answer me.

On the right hand side of the main page lookw here it says 'banner as contest'. Click on new. That will bring up 10 banners (sometimes). Click the bit labeled 'unworthy' on all 10. Click submit.

A simple equation...

Postby Elifantboy » Sat Nov 12, 2005 9:49 am

music = art

anime = art

music + anime = X

Solve for X

Maybe this will help the left-brained people out.
