Is it copying if you didn't know?

Postby DuskvsTweak » Wed Nov 02, 2005 2:32 pm

Today at work I got this great vision for an AMV. It was going to be Blood: The Last Vampire and Battle without Honor and Humanity and I was really jazzed about it. So I went on the search to see if it's been done and to my heart-break, one person has done it. And sumbited it 10/30/05. Should I still make the video or would I be criticized for copying? Just looking for advice.

If the video in question is in the entire AMV community's collective memory, then you will catch shit. If it isn't, no one will notice. I rip tons of people off but no one notices because all the videos are relatively obscure.

Its ok to do it but generally if you do you had better do a better job than the person before me, the same thing happened to me while i was editing a video, i wasnt just gonna stop doing it , i just keep on dont what i was doing and made sure i surpassed the other video

Just make your own version of the video. Don't watch the other guy's video beforehand.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

That happened to me one time with a vid, but the other person's really wasn't very good.

So I watched their AMV as I was making mine to make sure that I didn't use any of the same footage in the same places so that I could not be accused of "idea stealing". Some ideas are just obvious.

Hmm... I reckon this is a fairly common conundrum amongst people around here...

The way I sometimes view my video editing is that I make the AMVs because I have a vision or an idea that I just want to see happen (ie. a combination of a video and music to a theme that I want, obviously enough). Now, being the lazy person that I am, I actually would rather download that video if such a concept which I was thinking of already exist. And if I'm still not satisfied that what I was playing around with in my mind was not made satisfactorily then I may be prodded into action.

I stopped even checking to see if an Idea is done before. If I realy want to do it, I just do it. The last few videos I made, I didn;t even check beforehand.

Yeah when I see that the concept has already been done very well i usually find something else to do, like for example we also had the idea to do Phenomenon to naruto but when the video was released and was pretty good i lost interest in doing it my self and decided to work on one of my many other ideas

Yeah, exactly... at any one time I probably have one or two ideas flying in my head, and I think my time is just better spent doing something that doesn't entertain me yet.

Although... I was thinking... this probably works more for me since my ideas generally are not likely to have been done before, and ususally if it had, I would know about it.

If you use a anime/music combination that someone els has done, you've failed at life.

just do it if you want.... unless they did it pretty well :P

but if you thought of it BEFORE you looked it up then its not idea stealing...

its just BAD if you take the song/anime idea AND steal footage from the AMV... I've had that happen to me lol

Very very simple..

If you watch other person's video first that has the same combo/concept, and take ideas/scene selections that you think works well from there to re-use in your AMV... it's copying.

If you just make the AMV before watching the other one with same combo/concept, and end up having plenty of same scene selections anway.... then it's not copying, no matter what people say.

Trouble comes when one viewer watches both of them and goes ballistic about it just because your AMV was released after the other ;) With this, Beowulf is on to something..

..and Bum.. just shut up and go screw a fly or something

For this perticular reason is why I typically refuse to watch other AMV's I'd never even post my stuff here. Only the stuff I have submitted to contests are on-line. In doing so no one else's creativity will affect mine. each one of my videos is my own creatoin, un affected or influenced by someone elses work. now and again I would imagine some things would be similar. What i do find handy is just checking to see who has made what to which song or video. Just to try and keep the combinations I create more unique. usually if I find one person that has created a video based on the same series, and song as what I had in mind. I will probably not even pursue it.

I think it would be silly to use something from a AMV someone else made.. to me that shows a lack of creativity... go with what you feel the scene requires, and not someone elses.. When I'm creating a video if it doesn't inspire me right away, it's put on the back burner.. heck I still have some back there.. un touched. for the most part.. just the opening is done. Someday I may return to it..

DuskvsTweak: I would say it is typically up to you. Since someone else has used the same music, and series.. did you watch their video? if so, I personally would forget it.. and see if a different music piece sparks your ideas. But if you have not watched it, then really I don't think it would hurt to make it.. since the one in question was only released a week ago.. I think you could only really be criticized for copying is if you watched the video, yours may have some influence based on what you saw in the other video. Just my thoughts..

REAL trouble is when you make a video, then someone makes one AFTER yours, using a couple of similar concepts or gags, and you get accused of ripping >them< off. GRRRR.

...still bitter over Naru-85 vs. Stillpreoccupied.
