Upon reading this, I simply had to post. Being the lurker that I am, this is totally a rare occurance.
When I first found this site, I was a total and utter anime-n00b (some may argue that this is a good thing to be though) My friend pointed me here one day because he had an Evangelion video hosted here. Anyway, I made my way into the "top 10% list" and clicked the first one. Let me just say that I bought RahXephon shortly after. It's been pretty much that way for every series I watched after; I first saw it here. Most recently I saw the "Magic Stick" clip in AMV Hell 3 which led me to getting Negima.
I'm getting off the point. What I want to say is, the only reason I've bought/downloaded 90% of the series I have is because of AMVs that I have seen on this site. And often it goes the same for music as well. Most AMV creators use interesting/non-mainstream music for their videos, thus introducing me to songs I would have never known existed otherwise.
Legality of these things is most certainly shakey, for simple fact that everything used was created (more or less) by someone else. Still I think if the creators of an anime or the author of a certain song were shown a video using their product, they would say "That's pretty damn cool". For simple fact that it is.
In conclusion: Laws suck.
