I feel that it's "selling out" because it involves transfer of funds for something that is usually done without said transfer. The fact that he supposedly did it for a charity, or that he wants to edit something for someone, has nothing to do with this.

If it becomes the norm, then it would be difficult to call it "selling out". But it is not.

This comes out of a belief (appearently, exclusive to me) that accepting money for AMVs is just bad. Who knows.

Commence with the "stfu pinko" posts.

I covered a bake sale for the earthquake relief fund on the weekend. People payed money to pie some higher ups, have their tarot read, bet on Mortal Kombat challenges, sang karaoke, etc.

You raised money for a "skill" you possess. People do crazy things for charity all the time.

Do you really need justification for this? Or are just trying to boost your ego :P

I'm surprised someone would pay *anyone* $50 to make a video, even if the money was going to charity. But I guess the whole point of the program was to raise money, so whatever.

Emo death metal? Please recommend me some.

It's not ego boost that much - I really just want to suggest it as an idea for others to try out at their local cons, is all...

They do this every year to fund the Vividcon live-action fan video convention, I believe. They auction off high-end video editors to fans; the fans and the editors strike their own deals about how much the fans are involved in the creative process. They set their own limits beforehand (I'll work with these series, etc. etc.)

Not for charity, but it would show that it's not such an out-there idea. Some editors went for pantloads of money, IIRC. Triple digits.

Here we go, last year's page. ...holy hell, that's more money than I remembered. So anyway, there's a very successful precedent.

Just another example of the extend AMVs have evolved from simply a hobby - now they serve a charitable function. How cool is that?

Well, it's certainly funny to see what people will pay for.
