Story in AMV's

Postby Orwell » Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:08 pm

Can a strong story be told through visual's alone if one wanted to create an entirely new story, with the anime as a medium, and the song there to add music, instead of being the main story carrier?

Some video's I've watched aimed for a story, but I never felt that it was that effective. If by happenstance I've managed to just miss the ones that are really good, could you direct me to those?

Bakadeshi's Zetsumo does this amazingly. If you know Naruto (which I don't, but I read his video description thoroughly), this video completely shifts from the norm. Seriously. He pulls out all of the stops here. If I hadn't read that description, I would have never realized that that wasn't the way it happened in the anime. About the song...I believe that he says it has nothing to do with the story at all. Well, it's in Japanese, so many viewers wouldn't know either way, I suppose.

Anyway, that's the best example off of the top of my head. Link to the video is in my signature - don't worry, my sig isn't going to change anytime soon.

See Zetsumo and Whisper of the Beast for two very popular examples.

I had a hard time telling a story in just images - maybe the idea was a bit too complex just for visuals, who knows. I had to resort to subtitles to get the story across and now I just get knocked for the subtitles :D

sometimes you can't win...

check it out (it's the one in my sig), you might like it... maybe not...

Serial Killer Mentality does that fairly well, too.

When people bitch about an FX-based AMV not having a story, it's like complaining that a book written in Swahili doesn't have words. Even half-second random shots from every show in existence are capable of telling a story to some degree. "Stories" are only as valid as those who see them. Any fool with half a brain can put a video together with "significant" scenes and "relevant" accompanying music, and lots of editors seem to not even do that much correctly. However, there are some vids so well crafted, they don't bore me to pieces. Half of it is usually just tone, but that should apply for any video. If anything, there's too many vids that tend to focus on "telling a story," and not enough on making it fun and original to watch.

I have a couple to point you towards:

Tainted Donuts - An oldie, but a goodie. The song's in Japanese, so I doubt the video relies on the words. Anyway, it makes sense even if you don't know Japanese. The story is kinda based on the characters and stuff, but I consider it different enough.

Virtua Anime - The song is basically instrumental and the story is decent too. Since AD created Asuka in 3-D, she does all kinds of stuff that never happened in the real story. Of course, it has text to explain it - I don't know if that would qualify for your "completely visual" thing.

Path of the Deus - Granted I don't know much about Angelic Layer, but I hear it's pretty much fluffy shojo, so I'm guessing this story is a bit different? And most of the song is that screaming stuff that you can't understand well and/or doesn't make sense. But the story works well.

Hope that helps you out!

Anyway, most people don't want to see AMVs with music just as background. What's the point of having music then? It's gotta do something with the story or else you wouldn't have picked it.
Yeah, the AMV thesis....that was me.

All of JudgeHolden's vids are great storytellers.

Another of my favorites that both combines animes and changes the stories is All For My Love by Kragdrim.

Bakadeshi is pretty good at getting a story across.

Try:
AR2: Bakadeshi: Circle of Sin It's an instrumental, that tells a story quite well with no lyrics.

Bakadeshi: Accidentally in Love It has lyrics, but still does a great job of telling a story for two side chracters in the show.

Corran: The last transmission Also an instrumental of sorts. Sort of an artsy peice, but it does a great job of telling a story. I really liked this one.

Pen-Pen2002: Requiem for a Nightmare - Yet another instrumental, that also tells it's story.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Zetsumo has a story?? Sorry to Bakadeshi, I love Bakadeshi, but when you get this far out it's all just artist interpretations. AMVs are music + video, why try to tell your story with just video? Sure you can make an instrumental, but, logically those are a> action or b> dance amvs keying on beats and/ or sound effects. I would take the time to pimp my own videos as both are what I'd call heavily story based (the first one haveing NOTHING to do with the anime -_-) but I'm too lazy. You bitches probley wouldn't beleive me anyway o.0.

DCDeveloperX also does an EXCELANT job in this aspect.

If you want an AMV that tells a story, just click my sig. Its a 25 minute story.

I think a point worth mentioning is that (I would bet) people don't appreciate the story in the video unless EVERYHTING else is good. If your video is telling a narrative but the editing is boring, say goodbye to your narrative, because no one cares.

Things poeple notice in a video in order of priority:

Song
Effects (if present)
Anime
Editing
Story

If all your ducks are in a row, THEN you can appreciate the story and the other finer things. But if they aren't, you can't. I don't give a shit about the story the video is telling if I hate the song, or I think the effects are tacky.

sort of. There are amvs that watching the anime is a MUST, describes the anime, and there are amvs that stand up on their own, so you can flic ole anime out of that equation.

my akira video would be
song
effects (not present)
anime (not relative)
story
editing (it ABSOLUTELEY sucks so I can't see how anybody could rate this over story on my video)

a few others like it would be... would be... well none other like it (mostly cuz I don't want to say Elvis vs. Anime's or Purpose of Pursocon's editing sucks ;p) a CLOSE one, though would be The Wired Knight's Ephalumps and Woozles vid.

On my second vid I'd put the order more EXACTLY as you said, though.
