As much as it sucks to have to do it, I say stick with the fansubs, and crop away. Unless you want to cough up the cash to buy import DVDs, that is.

I have the same problem since two of my favorite AMV-fodder series have either no DVD release (One Piece) or a very limited one (Fullmetal Alchemist). It's annoying, but hey. You suck it up and deal.

For an insane amount of cash like I did. :x

How much did those things run you anyway?

Back to the subject, you could always use the raws that they pput out the day before teh fansubs come out so you dont have to worry about them.
The site is saiyaman or something like that google it. I have been getting the raws for naruto for like 50 episodes now for when i make another naruto video. I would like to get region 2 but i dont want to pay an arm and a leg for em eather

About $38 for 1 dvd.. I had to get 2 that had very important eps so factor in tax and shipping, I paid $89 for both. :x

The rest of the Naruto R2 footage I get is rented from my japanese video rental which had nearly every disc except the 2 I needed.

And as castor said, it's really expensive.

Seriously, I wanted to start buying up the School Rumble R2s, just to find it'd cost me 60 for each... and they only have 2 episodes a DVD. Until I get a better job or a raise or what have you, I think I'm better off just creating a faux letterbox around my entire video like someone else suggested. This is the best way to make it look at least a little professional.

It's quality issues. The Naruto Region 0 HK's are pretty much poorly recorded VHS transferred to DVD. The R2's are beyond gorgeous and are even superior to the raws but the price is pretty steep. I have a crappy computer and I don't have the patience to process the raws.

And then there are the series (like Le Portrait De Petit Cossette) that only have one episode per R2 DVD, and are still full-priced. That was pretty rough on the wallet. :(

And let's not forget that the revenue from HK bootlegs goes to fund other shady business ventures, such as drug smuggling and children for sale :?
