I recently softsubbed one of my AMVs for the hell of it. I was feature testing MP4 and the ttxt format. Works fine, and I was surprised it did actually since I wasn't aware that it was supported yet.

The srt format is no frills and dead easy to edit. An alternative is ssa where you can specify fonts and styles. Ttxt is just bizarre, it's kind of like ssa meets html. The easiest way around this is to write a srt and convert it to ttxt in mp4box and configure the styles later.

As for container, if you are using softsubs I'd recommend MKV or MP4. Whatever format or container you use, this pack (oh noes codex pack!1!) will play it back with no hassle.

If you are familliar with the AMVapp, well this is AMVapp's equivalent for playback. Minimalist installer for the formats that matter. Fixes all your OGM, MKV, MP4, DivX, XviD, H.264, AAC, Vorbis etc. playback in one fell swoop. It's <6 MB too.

I normally wouldn't pimp codec packs of anysort, and being an encoder I'm aware of the problems it can cause, but I've used this myself and it's fine.

My vote is for softsubs. People will be most famillar with MKV over OGM or MP4, and IIRC the tools for creating MKVs are more readilly available and up to date.
