What does everyone think [of digital effects?]

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

I hate effects, hell, I hate editing. It's soooo pompous and tedious and all it does is create people who hate your video...

So let me be the first person [who people say make good effects] to say I bash effects.

Especially the ones which I can easily copy WITHOUT using Adobe After Effects...

*/me continues editing using fx since that's the only thing me is good at... :P

I agree only partially to that, I just hate when people with little experience abuse effects, because they think it will make their videos cool, but I just LOVE them when thery're used by someone like VicBond or Turboneko. They know the stuff they're doing!
Just see 'Die another day' or 'Petit Love' and you'll see what I mean.

hey, we all gotta learn somehow...and it helps to have ppl like you "bash" our effects with constructive helpful criticism in our ops or announcement forums cuz if you didn't we'd just keep doing the same ole stuff w/ small steps of progress but to have things pointed out....could mean a big eye opener for the editor in the way they use effects for future vids.

nobody is born knowing how to perfectly use visual effects or certain software or whatever but we TRY....give us that....at least.....
i'm sure the legends such as Vicbond and Zarxrax had subtle beginnings too but now most of use in amv community look to them as guru's of the art...

You wrote like I'm bashing new AMV makers, if you read less superficially you could catch that I'm in fact not talking about the newbies, but defending the using of effects in general, plus explainig what are the ones I dislike.
I didn't say "all newbies just make bad amvs with effects, they're a lazy bunch that know nothing, so they should just drop the work and let it to amv god makers like VicBond" and so on. I just stated there are bad amvs with bad abused effects. Stop.

So don't put in my mouth meanings I didn't thought thanks.

As for my thoughts on effects, I couldn't give a flying fuck less if they're in a video. I've seen AMVs with and without effects that I thought were equally amazing, so it just goes to show that there's no clear cut way of defining it. It's all in the video itself and people's opinions.

it helps to have ppl like you "bash" our effects

it wasn't an attack....truce :P

i guess when it comes to effects, i like em. even i can agree, there are some vids that just seem to have them for no reason but only the creator knows

that is all :D

But some of us lack the computer knowhow to do anything in our editor NUT simple fades/ transitions... that shouldn't stop us to be pridefull... just cuz we're imbacils ;p.

They can be nice and can help a video, but at the same time they can harm it. Like everything, good in moderation. Though I'm glad we're moving away from the period where the only videos that ever seemed to win things were videos with lots of special effects, it became the key to winning a contest whihc was frustrating.

As for me, I'm more for pure and simple editing rather than anything fancy. But that's just the way I like to edit.

I like to think of effects as just another part of the editing process, which people can use to their advantage (or disadvantage, I suppose) in order to express the visions they have for creating their works. Effects seem to come naturally in this day and age, where people have so much freedom by using complex pieces of software to make their ideas come to life. As time passes by, it should be evident that videos will continue to evolve, containing more innovative ideas, more ways to weave stories, and yes--even more effects put to use. "Good ol' fashion direct cuts & fades" are still viable choices for anyone to go about editing, but these simple methods are slowly starting to fade away (no pun intended). My point is that I appreciate the existance of effects since they provide us with a wide range of options in the editing process. Personally, I still like keeping it simple, depending on the style of AMV I try to make.. usually the sappy, dramatic kinds.

One thing that bugs me to a large extent is when people use FX solely for beat synch (even when I do it). It's boring, and especially so when it lasts the WHOLE video. For example, some CERTAIN recent unnamed Naruto editor had the gall to repeat the same FX over and over. I couldn't tell what the fuck was going on in the video with all the static either. What could have been potentially very awesome was bogged down in repetitiveness and blocking too much of the picture out.

Personally, I like FX most when I have no clue how clue how they were done (that's probably how it is for a lot of people). Problem is, there's not many FX I'm incapable of replicating given the time and patience.

FX are no substitute for good editing either. Any video must have a solid editing base to be enjoyable.

Effects are a good reason to make me believe I'm editing something original.
