Like any other person I can be an effects groupie when it is used either in: A. a way that adds to the story being told or B. just a fun video where I just want to enjoy the video and not give a hoot about the plot i.e. a dance video. While I am guilty myself, I don't really like when an effect just pops out of nowhere and stands out completely. (That's probably why now I tend to make less effects videos until I find my niche.) Too many effects just confuses the heck out of me. Eventually I could end up liking the video if it turns out to be like a Where's Waldo type of thing where I find something new everytime. In the long run I still like story more than effects cause I am looking to be moved emotionally in some way. As far as what I consider an effect, anything that is not a fade in/out or dissolve is an effect to me. I consider things such as zooms, tweaking colors, and even time changes an effect even though it is basic. Despite this a lot of the effects videos that I truly see as effects videos use more advanced or expert level effects that the average person wouldn't use. Did that make any sense? :?

Everyone's saying the same thing in this thread. Why don't you quote each other instead of rephrasing something that's been stated.

For me, a "Digital Effect" is anything that can be done to visually manipulate the footage at hand through a computerized editor. Editing frames in an image editor and reprocessing them is a digital effect. Masking is a digital effect.

As for what I think of them in videos... terrible, unless you're doing something I have never seen before (and I don't mean masking something different... but maybe masking in a different aspect). If it's used well, and it hasn't been run into the ground by other editors (for instance: masking out characters, overlaying footage in bars, etc.), I like it. But if you're going to make a simple edited video I may not be too crazy about it. The more unusual something is to me, the more interested I am.

digital video effects are pretty dandy these days. without them, i would be less able to produce a music video that matches what i envision for the video. with the development of more complex effects, i imagine editors will go into their planning stages with more elaborate and perhaps more clear video ideas in their heads.

the use of digital effects is not always conducive to the quality of the video. see sarahtheboring's graph. http://uvl.iwarp.com/fanmedia/junk/fx-axes.jpg

x2, I see it pretty often that people who bash down effects are people who seem to have never even tried making a good use of them or failed doing so :P (no offense)

They're good to add in crappy videos, so that when people complain about it, you can say it's because they just hate effects.

Mmmmm. Frosting Cake. *drools*

My favorite effects (and my most liberal use of them as it would be) are the ones that nobody notices unless they really know a show to realize, "Hey! THAT's not what I remember that scene looking like!" It's actually kind of fun to have checked the 'Digital Effects' box in the video entry and get reviews that say, "Sorry but I had to give you a low score on effects because I really didn't see any."
