I don't... personally I'm no fan of them however could you clarify as what you think a "digital effect" would consist of?

I dont concider masking as a digital effect, more an advance transition, but thats me.

Digital effect work is so gauche.

Analog effects are where it's at.

Imo too. Masking is not a Digital Effect. Is an optycal effect. It's complicated to judge what's a digital effect is, but generally what people think about it's SOO different from person to person.. :?

they're overrated. i'l take a simple looking (keyword looking) video anyday.

i consider masking a digital effects. considering most videos with "effects" are using a form of masking, why not consider all masking an effect? masking out the lip flapping of a character is the same concept as moving geometry... just one is more visable and apparent then the other.

Effects can kill a video or add to it. I don't know how it can add to it, but I've seen some AMVs and such made by friends where the stuff they used was pretty good. Stuff like Euphoria, completely killed it. Shounen Bushido, completely killed it.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE EDITING FOR THE WIN!

This has been debated over and over again. Certain people know how to implement effects to add to the video others just use them for the sake of it. It's strange though, all the people who posted up till now and aren't in favor of using effects are actually people who never learned to use them. :D

I consider any type of footage manipulation besides cleanup/brightness adjusting/etc like fades and motion stuff to be effects.

I like 3d effects, sound effects and transitions (and rotoscope or whatever, not including lipping of coarse...) anything else is wastefull.

Depends on if they have a point. You can just tell certain videos the effects are there just because the creator wanted to play with effects, IE they make a circular pattern with lens flare or something stupid like that. Those videos generally suck with the sole exception of some dance videos.

Other videos the effects are there to accent parts of the video, Angels Redemption 2 or The Wasteland have a fair amount of effects for example although few of them are things you would notice unless you look for it.

And still other videos basically requires effects. Dragon Bebop Z or Tainted Donuts just wouldn't work without rotoscoping characters and Shamless Rock Video wouldn't be the same without the dancing eyebrows.

So in the end there's no definate answer, it all depends on how they're used.

There have been a few amvs of series that I haven't seen where things look like effects but they're part of the actual anime.... like euphoria.

I like them if they're well-done and add to the depth and enjoyment of the video.

Otherwise, eye candy is fun to watch now and again.
