Quality or Quantity?

Postby anneke » Wed Aug 17, 2005 12:49 pm

Which do people prefer when it comes to AMVs they create?

Quantity - A bunch of videos, good or bad.

Quality - A few videos that are really good, live up to some sort of 'standard'.

I want to believe I make 'Quality' videos, and I spend time on my ideas, but I think I fall more into the 'Quantity' area. I make a bunch/most of my videos for no other reason then to get them out of my head. I don't tend to worry about the quality in terms of if others will like them, or if they will win at a contest or anything. I try to make the best video I can, but when it comes down to it, I'll sacrifice the 'quality' in favor of being able to just finish the video. (I don't worry about it being a popular anime or music, etc...)

Feel free to discuss.

I would like to at least combine quality/quantity in a way but with the lack of free time plus the compliactions of ideas, I'd have to say quality obviously.

If I could make videos with just thinking and having them magically appear, then you'd get quantity from me... not too sure about quality. :P

I don't >think< anyone intentionally cranks out crappy AMVs (Excluding troll vids like my 'Simon' and AMV_4000's 'Best DBZ Vid Evah!') but some people are happy with a particular level of mediocrity...either they lack the patience , tools, or skill to make exceptional videos. Lets face it, we all can't win the gold medal. Does that mean that unless you can crank out a winner on the first try (cough Chihuahua! cough), you shouldn't make any? And frankly, what may be someone's hated video may be someone else's favorite. I'm a hairball when it comes to subtitles and logos, yet my #1 ranked favorite video has both simply because it strikes a nerve...gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I definately go for quality. I have a ton of ideas written down and I want to do them all, but because I think they are good idea's I want them done well. I like to think I'm trying/learning something new with every video I make. There are plenty of older video ideas I've done that I liked at the time, but now that I've improved, I'd love to even go back and do those again.

At this point, I'm just making the videos I want to make. But I tend to work on those rather sporadically, so I don't make very many in any given year.

I don't think I have any more ideas that will really wow people, but I'd still like to realize the ideas I do have in the best way possible.

So do I. My list is long, and I know that I'll never be able to do them all. That's why, if nothing else, I've tried to pawn them off to other creators that I know are good. Granted, I've only had one result to that end, but the video did kick ass, so no complaints from me.

On topic, when I'm creating the video, I go for quality (though it may not always show... ). When I'm watching, I try for quality as well, but sometimes I have to settle for quantity. Occasionally, there's just no really spectacular videos in the fandom I'm searching. So, I settle for a few good ones instead.

So it would seem that people go for Quality vs Quantity.

Now to my other point of discussion... Does working on 'Quality' hurt the AMV world? I've seen far to many people who spend so much time on a video, and then they send out that one video for over a year to every contest out there that they can. They lack the Quantity to enter every contest and this ofcourse cause other problems within the community (such as Trolling). Do people not realize that a Quality video should not try to fill in for a lack of Quantity?

Discuss...

so uhh? i just make what i like, but i want it to be how i like it.... I havent entered any cons so i cant go there... but if its their decision to enter only 1 video to several cons then so be it...

i want to enter a con, but at the same time i want to be there to see the crowd's reaction on the first con i enter
ah stuck with no money supply... sucks

No, greed, lack of restraint, and attention whoring hurt the AMV world.

But as far as I've seen, most of the people who spend lots of time on videos don't troll the ones they have. So I guess I don't see the problem.

Anyone who says quantity over quality needs a head check.

Who would want a thousand shitty videos being pumped out?
