I Didn't Know Where To Post This But, Business Proposition

Postby TaylrMayd » Tue Aug 09, 2005 11:45 am

Hello to everyone. I have a business propositioin for some people. I am a music producer in Alabama. I work with a variety of different artists and groups from a variety of different genres.

Currently, I am wanting to have some AMV's created for some of the artist that I am working with at this time. Some the the songs have vocals and some are just instrumentals. But I wanted to get (pay) someone or a few creators to do some things. How much would you charge for service. Let me know your damage (price) and stipulations, restrictions, or requests and we can negotiate something.

You can post a reply to this message or I can be reached at jt_1995@yahoo.com.

I think you will find that the vast majority of editors here will not accept payment for AMVs "commissioned", as we do not own the rights to the video footage used. We can't in good conscience make a profit off it.

That said, could you post some samples of your artist's work? Someone may find they like the idea of making a video to one of their tracks.

Technically you'd be paying us for an illegal service - for this AMV to be legitimate you'd need permission from the licencers of the anime (both American and Japanese, most likely) to make this kinda thing. I assume that like everyone else like you who's come before, you don't have such permission.

Thank you all for responding. I don't have the rights or permission (of coarse you knew that, lol), but I was really trying to compensate individuals for their time. I know that it takes many hours to do AMV's (both good and bad ones), it would be just a show of appreciation for the work. These won't be for sale anyway. Just for the artist to have something cool.

Thanks

I will try to post some samples, thanks for the suggestion.

I would be interested in hearing some new music. As Scintilla said earlier most of us probably willn't accept payment, and I as well willn't either. If I like the music then I'll make a video because I want to. Also this site is a decent way to get new music from local bands out there. So let us know when you do have the samples up.

However i think many editors here will jump to the occasion of editing a normal music video professionally, if the company offering the footage has shot it themselves or can legitimatly prove they own the rights to use the footage.

Actually, I think most licenses to domestic companies would include the rights to do things like make videos with the show, since they have to be able to modify it for making promos and such anyway. Though I'd imagine some licenses are more restrictive than others in what they cover- I seem to remember hearing about some hefty limits on what could be done for the 4 videos done for the Noir DVD. But, yeah- obviously we couldn't get paid unless all the rights were secured.

I think many of us would love for new bands looking for a bit of promotion to make some of their songs available for us to download and potentially make videos with- I've learned about a number of good songs and groups from watching AMVs (as well as about a number of new shows), so at least within the demographic that watches AMVs, it can be good (free) advertising.

If you don't have a specific anime in mind, you could always try to get someone to make an 'original animation' music video. In that case, there's no question of property rights, but you'd probably want to check some art sites (www.deviantart.com as an example) for an amature artist. If you want an amv-maker, I've seen some videos that were made entirely in After Effects that might as well not have used *any* anime footage. Match one of the effect-editors up with an anime-style artist and you should be fine. People sell commissioned fanart all the time at conventions and in Japan (read: doujinshi), so it shouldn't be a problem.

There is also the option of holding a contest with a cash (or non-cash) prize for the winner through use of the music you suggest. I think that will sidestep certain illegalities associated with paying someone to make an AMV...

Actually, fanart and doujinshi and such is illegal as well. Most rights holders of the anime aren't such bastards that they would go after this sort of thing though--most of them are cool with it. SOME companies might not hesitate to go after you though. I can recall reading stories about Disney suing nurseries for having pictures of mickey mouse painted on the wall.

Like everyone's allready said, paying someone to do an amv is something you should just forget about. It's illegal, imoral and just plain selfish on the editors part to accept money. However ya should post some of your tracks, their are people who might take a certian liking to one.

-1 Spelling/grammar mistakes [abound] in your post. As a professional you should know how to spell.

-1 the use of lol

-1 Not naming your music producing company for verification

-1 Not naming yourself for credibility
